Tama Potaka: Why homelessness is up, endangered species, Māori-Crown relations | Q+A 2025

Community housing groups are sounding the alarm on increasing rates of homelessness. Q+A asks Associate Housing Minister Tama Potaka if the Government’s social housing policies have contributed to the issue.

As Conservation Minister, Q+A asks him about NZ First Minister Shane Jones’ desire to increase mining. Potaka is also asked whether he agrees with the Prime Minister that Māori-Crown relations have worsened in this Parliamentary term.

Join Jack Tame and the Q+A team and find the answers to the questions that matter. Made with the support of NZ on Air.

  1. Multi-Story Social housing next to Rail / Main Bus Hubs = No Residential Vehicle parking / No Property maintenance / Additional Communal gardens, Laundry, Kitchen, Playground and adult spaces / entertainment areas – with monthly inspections of each floor. AKLD Newmarket''s old AEPB Site is a good place to start. Parnell Train station (Museum side) would be another.

  2. We recently in the last two weeks had to ask for emergency housing due to the property we were renting for 10 and a half years was sold, the privately owned units sold to investors and they wanted all 4 properties vacated.. We went to KO who told us winz handle housing so we went there and they dumped us in a boarding house were we were given a room that had meth crack bags everywhere, pills, needles, syringe caps with blood in them and the window was boarded up so you couldn't see outside. We told the staff they said they get it all the time junkies smoking meth in the rooms and said they'd Vacuume up the room and it'll be fine.. We started getting sick and believe it was from all the meth chemical residue in the room and had all the systoms like itchy skin, headaches and trouble breathing and when we told winz they literally laughed it off and said it's better than living in your car. Luckily I took photos of the room before they Vacuumed up as evidence.

  3. Why is it governments problem ? most are our maori where’s the whanau ? How about local iwi shouldn’t they stepup help ? how about the government funded Maori organizations setup for this ? were are they ?🤔

  4. Why homelessness is Up 😂 well bottom line is because people cant afford it they simple dont have the Money, Everyone knows Why! there is an accumulation of many things, starting with Inflation which is caused by alot of factors such as Government overspending there's the fact that there are way to many people doing a goverment Job or Contract, there is way to many people on a benefit emergency housing the that costs tax payers to pay those people, councils that do the same things as well as spending money on things like Rainbow street crossings Crossings, add to that the Investments in our own Infrastructure and all the big Businesses that make huge Profits the Banks, the Food sector, the Power companies, there's All the international effects like Tariffs and Petrol and then there is all the Taxes in the wrong places along with just straight up poor money management in General, the Party swapping every Election, Covid, and this is not every thing but it shows a Massive issue, maybe some policies have contributed but that will be a small number in comparison to the rest of it.
Honestly something Fundamentally needs to Change as having a Homeless population of any Number goes against everything a Government is put in place to manage, so those people that make all the decisions Should be held accountable, maybe they need a deduction of there pay package back to the population as a Punishment for there mismanagement, no Bonuses no perks no Write offs for any of them until they get the Debt back into a Surplus! Eventually there will be Radical people because of this and NZ will become more criminal and become more Violent. This is ridiculous and the Government and the Rules that they Govern under, needs a Fundamental Change. These People who get so well payed that none of these Issue are disrupting there lives, maybe the Politicians should be forced to take a minimum wage to give them Propective and when they get Number into the right places they can get a Bonus kinda like how a CEO contract works base pay with Bonuses

  5. before National came into power!.Potaka actually agreed with Labours housing policy, but it earned Him a reprimand from PM Luxon. Potaka is just PM Luxons lackey, not a Housing or Conservation Minister!.

  6. This guy is finding ways to not answer jacks question he wont answer the question its because he was the minister of housing and now he's no longer the minister of housing because he cant do his job his policy has added more homelessness to the already over crowded and unavailable homes as more people are doing what they can to survive. its the rental of high costs to rent a normal 2 bedrooms is unaffordable to a wide range whanau, non Māori children and mothers are the ones that are finding it hard to manage their urgent priorities.

  7. What are the common factors in homelessness and which group are the most over represented? Address the root causes of homelessness and fund Marae, Hapū and Iwi to work out the pathway forward for Māori. If you’re lucky enough to be born into a functional family, free from abuse, and surrounded by working adults, two parents who encourage education and don’t have any/many wider family members in prison, it is unlikely you’ll ever become homeless … short of addiction, loss of job, breakdown in relationship all happening at once if you don’t have decent support from your family/friends.

Better interview by Jack – I’m glad someone has talked to him about letting his interviewees answer questions without talking over or interrupting them.

  8. Tama Potaka is a bit like Megan Woods..
Cant answer a simple question and instead introduces a large "word salad" in which he considers "a response" to a question..
"Get off the grass e hoa!"..

  9. There is no preventative methods for homelessness you must become ho.eless before you get emergency housing support and if you don't have a phone or transport your most likely to be living on the street until you get yourself into a city or town for urban areas Hamilton is the worste they wont offer emergency housing

  10. You can't get emergency housing assistance without having applied for private rental first and you are most likely to become homelessness before getting any support for emergency housing there is no housing available more is there any emergency housing facilities

  11. And your landlord can kick you out with any cause, no cause eviction for landlords they contract themselves not just through housing but through healthcare as well there were deaths in Hamilton Waikato hospital for their cuts and damage to our healthcare.

They have cause more people to go homeless

  12. Legacy of Sir John Key – started from 2008 is continuing lol
Offcourse price shouldn't have crossed650k bracket
Yet Residential Housing become Investment hub, the one not stepp in has bought properties, the one living here working and paying taxes dont get to buy, where did you take the living to
Offcourse people are facing hardship and running away
