Teahupo’o: 1,000 feet deep to nearly dry

The most terrifying, mesmerizing wave on Earth, explained by the people who know it best.

Watch Raimana Van Bastolaer, Vahine Fierro, Eimeo Czermak, Matahi Drollet are and Surfline Chief Forecaster Kevin Wallis as they break down exactly what makes Teahupo’o a wonder of the surf world. The reef’s abrupt bathymetry. Swell direction and period. The local winds that make or break a session.

  1. Very impressive, but travelling on skis, not really skiing. Like Nazare is not really surfing. Neither is possible there though, it's something different

  2. i got smoked at chopes code red, like im just gonna sit on shore or the boat like a punk. i traveled half way across the world chasing swell. that reef hurts but my mindset is scoop the bottom turn and pray before its my turn haha. because what you wish for dreams turn into nitemares

  3. That wave breaking looks vicious even from back! Looks like that Nepal flooding disaster for a second. Can’t imagine how hard that thing could slam you onto the reef. 😬

  4. I will never tire of looking at Chopes waves. Since I was a teenager with a Surfer Magszine, seeing that perfect break on the cover, I have been enamored. In my late teens I could have surged one of those more western breaks, but never one of the huge ones. I only wish I would’ve had the opportunity to do so.
