The Air Force destroyed America’s first stealth bomber on purpose. Decades before the B-2 Spirit, Northrop’s YB-49 flying wing bomber proved unstable — no tail, no computer able to correct it fast enough — so every airframe was scrapped in 1950. By the 1980s, computers finally solved what 1949 couldn’t, and that same tailless instability became the B-2 Spirit’s stealth advantage.
