By 2006, the US Navy had retired the F-14 Tomcat and Congress ordered nearly every surviving jet shredded, crushed, or destroyed beyond recovery to make absolutely certain that not a single spare part could ever reach Iran. But with Iran’s fleet now gone, lawmakers want to bring the F-14 back into the skies.

J oh f is my favorite jet. I hope they bring it back with modernized weapons and a newer phoenix
I absolutely 💯 percent think it should come back into the skies without a doubt in my mind. I honestly think that will be incredibly cool.
Bring them back!
There are lots of older airframes that I always thought had a lot of use left in them. With new engines, new avionics, and a few modifications here and there they could serve once again. But I know the big defense contractors are against this because they wouldn't make as much money from it.
I'd definitely book a holiday to the USA if I had a chance to see the Tomcat fly again.
I still remember taking it for granted at the time but when we went to VA Beach in the summer you would see the Cat almost all day long flying over! I miss it……
I'd heard that every surviving Tomcat had had it's wing carry-through structure permanently disabled so that Iranian could never get it's hands on it. It was supposedly practically impossible to replicate. Any truth to that?
The Tomcat was actually a development of the F111, addressing the shortcomings. Primarily the steel wing box ( for the swing wings ) on the F111 was replaced by a new system using titanium.
Clickbait title.
Yes. Yes. Hell yes.
It was the B That also included the air scoop constrictor plates. Letting her fly at near super cruise.
The final countdown sucked
the only inconsistencies in this video are
1) we are not positive that all iranian f-14s have been destroyed . – the ones shown in proaganda videos that were parked in the open being hit by missiles were long known to be retired parts planes . iran keeps its remaining active f-14s in bunkered hangers , not out in the open .
2) the bill to donate the 3 remaining available f-14 airframes from the boneyard to the space and rocket foundation for restoration and allowing ONE to be restored to flyable condition IF possible was drafted and sponsored BEFORE we attacked Iran . it got approval from the senate during hostilities.
the f-14 is a great classic but its so far outdated compared to our current gen stuff that we no longer worry about iran getting spare parts .
they can fly it all they want , its huge and has a giant radar cross section. an f35 can see one from hundreds of miles away and shoot missiles from more than 80 miles away that a tomcat cannot escape from or confuse . and the tomcat would never see an f35 on its radar . simulations show that a f35 vs f14 would be a 95-98% kill rate favoring the f35 . its not even a fight so we deemed the tomcat to be a non-threat .
so IF iran has a few old tomcats still flyable we don’t care if they get any spare parts …not that there is much left anyways ….because the f14 does not pose a measurable threat in modern warfare to us .
if it was Iran vs Iraq or Qatar or a number of other neighboring countries , then yes the tomcat would pose a threat to those countries …but not to us .
They choose the wrong engine instead P&W. they should have use a GE engine which they solution compassed stall problem .
we need a new f14
Why waist the money to bring back a very well known superiority fighter that was built for that role if not to use it for that purpose bringing it out of retirement the f-14 was a perfect piece of American deplomacy every time she was put in the air so u want to showbird her out of the fact Americans miss her stature & legacy
Somewhat ironic that we were worried about the Iranian Tomcats while the fighter we couldn't find a use for – the F-5 – was the one that drew some of our blood.
Just another mistake by Teicky Dicky😊
A legend at Naval Medical Center, San Diego, years ago, was that their supply officer placed a requisition for an F-14; and that it got authorizing signatures up to finalization for delivery, when someone realized that it was a hospital command.
The F-14 is so pretty with those wings fully back.
The Cat needs to be apart of the Blue Angels.
The F-14 is an outstanding aircraft
I think they ought to give Northrup Grumman some F-14s and have them updated to the max! Better everything, lower maintenance, ect etc! Give them a challenge to make a Super Tomcat and see what can happen.
Because they don't want US veterans nor civilian owners having this warbird for homeland defense
I first heard of these tales from the Prophet Tom Clancy.
Watching A F14 flying at Mach speed over the Mediterranean blowing a 150 foot rooster tail behind , is a spine tingling to say the least .
Gentleman, thank you for your work in protecting this country and for making my high-school years so much fun. The Tomcat was (is) my favorite fighter of all time (with the P-51D a close second). I was a fanboy long before Top Gun immortalized the Big Cat. I cant tell you how many airshows I attended at NAS Point Mugu, MCAS El Toro , and NAS Miramar. Chasing airshows where the Tomcat would be flying was the best part of growing up in the '80s. Now I take my 14yo son to the USS Midway Museum in San Diego harbor to blabber on incessantly on what an amazing aircraft the F14 had been. It seems some of my childhood excitement has rubbed off on him because he told on one trip that the Tomcat was his favorite plane because "it just looks so much cooler than other planes". On that same trip he also told me that Led Zeppelin was his favorite band!! So 95% of my work as a father has been completed!!! Thank you again gents for making the '80s exciting for me and allowing me to share my love of flying with my son🤙🤙🤙
The Tomcat should fly and never be grounded.
Definitely bring her back!!
20min to say absolutely nothing. may this channel never be recommended to me again.
After the ordered retreat, effectively, American President J. Biden gave the Afghanistan terrorists planes, weapons, fuel, bases, vehicles, bases, hostages, and much more.
The Americans need ro be careful what they share.
The F 14 is junk and should never be unretired. The Navy was given the chance for a Naval variant of the F22 and didn't take it. BTW in a flat spin in the F14 sweeping the wings could recover it from a spin.
Yes, Tomcat is what a P40 and later in the war a Corsair was to Americans
Was anyone thrown in prison over selling iran F-14 parts?
2:40 is just straight gore
I remember something about a titanium piece of the wing that costed a fortune being a huge part of its cancellation.
We need about 10 of these stationed around the country. Put them up in the air for local air shows. Show them off as historical museum pieces. And even make them capable of being armed in case of something really crazy happening. lol.
This is just a flex on Iran
i have a question about "its too expensive to mantain, as it needs 50 hours of maintenance per hour of flight". i take they people working on the carrier has to do its hours, and they will be working on whatever if its not the tomcat. so where's the extra cost on that? the crews have to work either way. Its like when in spain we changed the top speed on the highways, goverment called to be something like "20 million euros on the new signs, and 5 million to put them in place". wtf, they just droped them on all the existing surveillance vans, but now instead going 30mph down the highway they were stoping on the signs to stick them in place. the real cost of puting them? 0€. i take this is "the same". unless all that extra cost is just plain parts wich of course makes all the sense, but to clarify.
Basically, aircraft wear-out, like bending paper clips and beer can tabs, especially in salt water…
That’s awesome. I knew about the reason why they were ordered destroyed. And it’s sad that Americans would sell Parts to an enemy just to enrich themselves but alas human nature right. But it’s great to hear that they’re going to get some of them flying again for airshows or whatever. It is a cool plane with a ton of cutting edge technology at its time and the only one ever and then I’m aware of with that wing technology, which is also part of its downfall. Very maintenance in intensive.
Yes, I'd love to see an upgraded F-14 again!! BTW, many speculated that the program was really killed because it was made by Grumman, a NY firm, that, though heroic in its many outstanding aircraft historically, was made in the wrong state during the Bush Jr admin and so, then VP Dick Cheney (the real power behind that admin) had it killed… Not long after, Grumman declared bankruptcy and was taken over by Northrup, a properly southern corporation…
I heard the Top Gun theme reading this title.
One of the reasons the P&W TF30 (AKA the dirty 30) would stall during rapid throttle transitions was because it still relied on bleed valves between the low and high pressure compressors instead of variable vanes in the high compressor. The reason was because General Electric had the patent for the technology up until the 1970s when it expired and P&W adopted it for their own engines.
Personally, I think bringing back the F14 would be a bad idea and a huge expense placed on the taxpayer. Producing just one or two for demonstration would likely make them the most expensive ones ever produced. However if some bored tech bro with a few extra billion burning in his pocket decides he wants a few for himself and his friends to play with, I know some guys who would happily do the work (but not for free).
Fell in love with F14 thanks to Robotech. Skull Squadron with the Jolly Roger was sick!
I think it might have been a different story if the Phoenix had been upgraded to be controlled by other planes, such as the E2, E3, and possibly an EA6B.
That would have allowed the F14 to fire the Phoenix with its radar off, which would have drastically changed the capabilities of both the F14 and the Phoenix. It may have even allowed other planes to fire the Phoenix such as the F15, A6 or even the F111 and B52.
Further upgrades to the Phoenix might have made it into a powerful anti-ballistic missile missile.
Jimmy Carter cut the legs out from under the Shah. Every name of death from Iran or Iranian proxies should be engraved on his library.
The government should have left the 14s in the desert under close observation and anyone caught stripping parts should have been executed.
It’s a beautiful giant war machine destined for air shows. Though doesn’t make sense to bring back into frontline services.
