While Final Fantasy X may have been a big hit, it had come hot off the heels of Square’s greatest failure. The Spirits Within had put the entire company in disarray, put series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi into a deep depression, and would be the impetus for Yoichi Wada’s ascension to the head of the company.
It may also have instigated the creation of the series’ first direct sequel, but Yoshinori Kitase insists otherwise. Would this female-led follow up reach the same heights as the original? Or would it be forever condemned to be seen as lesser?

I still havent beat final fantasy x-2, the tonal shift felt like a betrayal of x, and i get to the minigame where you give a woman a massage finding the spot as she moans as a game i just cant seriously
Tidus dying via balloon bomb shouldn't be funny, but somehow it is. 😭
Took me months, but I finally beat X-2 so I can watch this now! 🔥 (EDIT: hearing Clement at 9:53 made me laugh bc I'm a big fan of him and his FF videos as well 😂)
As one of Tidus' most ardent and committed haters, I can't imagine putting in all that effort and getting THAT as a perfect ending
I don't think I'm gonna make it to Final Fantasy 13 restrospectove 😂 if the sequel sequences are this blend, I'll not gonna follow that damn thing they put into Playstation 3.
Thanks for another video, mate.
I'm in my mid 30s and I have loved final fantasy since I first played 9 and I have loved or atleast liked and enjoyed every other game even the not so great ones, Andrew I truly enjoy your retrospectives, you have a peaceful voice that I can drift off to considerin I don't sleep well and haven't for most of my life I really like to see you do right through to 7 remake part 3 when it comes out. Thankyou for the time n effor you put into these videos
Love your videos my man.

SL about that. Technically he does die off screen, lol. After the story, there’s this whole convoluted thing that happens, anyway what’s important to remember is that our favorite protagonist from 10, steps on a land, mine and dies.
I think I will finally beat this game after 20 something years of playing 3/4 the way. Thanks for the great videos homie!
This game was my introduction to the Final Fantasy series when my dad brought it. It’s also how I first discovered Kingdom Hearts when I saw an ad for it at the back of the manual.
All these needless additions after FFX-2 remind me of that Simpson's meme of "Stop! Stop! He's already dead".

Yuna in X-2 is not Yuna. The change is like a totally different person.
19:41 – Heartbeat closing their doors also caused the cancellation of the Western release of the PS1 Dragon Quest IV. And the worst part is that they couldn't find a developer that could handle the game. Made worse is that even if they did, by 2002, the PS1 was already long dead. If Enix were to sell it, it would have to be at $20 and it wouldn't be enough to recoup costs. So essentially, Enix would have went bankrupt had this happened and the Square-Enix merger wouldn't have happened.
34:50 -ish
You might be able to mentally block out suffered hardship, but the body keeps the score. As long as people are alive to remember it, the more likely they are to record it, and this gives the next generation helpful guidelines on what to avoid. Whether or not they need the warnings, only time can tell. But discarding the past for a brighter future does nothing except give the cycle a chance to repeat.
Amazing production
Honestly tackling FF11 in this retrospect style is going to be probably your longest video ever if you plan to talk about all major story beats + Rhapsodies of Vana'diel and the ups and downs of the game's life through the various years in it's genre.
I am anticipating it's release immensely and it's possible 8-10 hour long video alone.
Alright, I'll replay X-2. It's certainly been long enough.
Thank you Andrew! Superb work as usual. As for perfect ending, it was bit cheesy, but I'd take it over killing your own protagonist like XV and XVI did.
What a fantastic video. Its 2 hour, 3 minutes, and 21 second length really said everything we need to hear about FFX's sequel. And nothing else. Ever.
Always honoured to have my music in these incredible videos!! Thanks Andrew ❤
Starting the video with Kuon is cheating…
Absolute cinema. I feel so similarly about this game. It's not for me, but I'm not saying it's a bad game either. You threw in a line about hint of sapphicness about the game but didn't go into detail. I had to rewind to make sure I heard correctly. I know the video game out a while ago, but I'm interested in further thoughts on the comment. LOVE your work!
Extreme props for being a North American who can correctly pronounce it as "Lara" and not "Laura" Croft o/
