My personal theory is that:
Hinako was chosen by the gods as a bride because of her vulnerability, not because she was some kind of “special chosen one.”
Years pass, and at the age of 23, Hinako accepts her fate and decides to marry Kotoyuki. However, her rebellious side, during a drug-induced episode of madness, attacks her wedding guests. She then decides to run away and refuses to go through with the wedding.
After escaping, she either commits suicide or simply disappears “forever,” whether by her own choice or because of the gods’ decision.
(This would explain why there are missing-person posters of Hinako and why Rinko says that Hinako is dead.)
After her death, her soul goes to the world of the gods, which is kind of like a purgatory, and her soul splits into two different Hinakos:
The one who WANTS to get married, and the one who DOESN’T.
Her soul also returns to her 15-year-old self, since that was the last time she truly experienced freedom.
The Hinako who DOESN’T want to get married ends up in a kind of alternate Hebisugaoka that functions as a purgatory, similar to Silent Hill 2. There, she has to face all of her fears and the social pressures placed upon her. That is why she sees her parents and her friends.
The other Hinako becomes the bride and performs the ritual that transforms her into the Mist Monster, continuing the tradition of the Fox God.
She also decides to “help” the Hinako from the world of mist accept her fate and become the Fox God’s bride. In a way, you could say that Hinako’s soul is reincarnated as a god as well.
Because of her insecurities about marriage, she becomes trapped in an endless cycle, with no way out. These cycles would correspond to the other endings of the game.
In the true ending, Hinako makes peace with her other half, and the two of them reach an agreement.
The Fox God was not entirely evil. He was more like a guardian whose mission was to ensure that the cycle continued every certain number of years, just as it had with all the girls who had been chosen as brides before Hinako.
That is why the god she was supposed to marry finally allows her to rest in peace together with her other half.
This would also explain why the village is completely empty at the end of the game: it is a place where Hinako’s soul can finally rest

still think the drug is such a lame connection despite Silent Hill being a sort of anthology series. f was nothing more than some cheesy anime adventure.
The supernatural factors were real. Those weren't all just metaphor, this explanation was good but not enough to explain all the notes that reveal the town has an actual curse.
This story is compelling I suppose but silly compared to SH1,2,3

I absolutely love how you did such a marvelous job explaining the story. I actually played through the game four times and there was still a lot that I didn’t quite understand. For example, in the true ending with the fox, I thought that it was the negative thoughts of Fox mask. I’m not even gonna try to say his real name because that would be a nightmare to spell and I don’t wanna mess it up. I thought the spirit fox in the true ending like I said was the negative thoughts but you saying that it’s the grandfather that actually makes way more sense. Also the ending when she accepts the marriage and her peeled faces on the floor. And then it gets crushed that was her remaining doubts because she still had them even though she went through with it. The doll that one I figured was the (I can’t spell it. I tried, but I can’t.) an item spirit. And to be honest, I need to thank you because with my fourth play through, I had heard that the true ending was on the fourth ending, but having to follow certain things I did not want to get too far in and mess it up, but I got sidetracked on other stuff, but I watched part of your video explaining what to do and I figured it out for myself where to go and all that so thank you I would never have gotten the true ending without your help so I finally finished watching the whole video after I finally completed the full game and your video really definitely helped to clarify a lot of my still remaining questions. I first played silent hill F when it came out didn’t really understand what was going on, watched lots of videos when I finished and understood better! Now i replayed it for the first time again (not new game +) enjoyed it a lot more now I understand it and I’m already straight into a second playthrough for the extra content 🙂 it’s so worth playing, it’s actually such an underrated horror game. It’s rare I can instantly replay a game I’ve just finished 😂
