The HPV Vaccine Rules. Why doesn’t everyone get it?

Human papillomavirus is a common infection, and while many cases resolve on their own, certain strains are responsible for a wide range of virus induced cancers. This episode traces the history and development of the Gardasil vaccine, exploring the medical breakthroughs that made it possible to target these specific pathogens.

By preventing initial infections, the vaccine has been instrumental in significantly reducing cervical cancer rates across the globe. In this video, Patrick Kelly examine tells the story behind these vaccination efforts and looks at the goals set by the World Health Organization to potentially eliminate this disease entirely within our lifetime.

  1. My daughter is turning 12 this year and she is getting her first dose as soon as she can. I'm a radiotherapy nurse and we treat a lot of women with cervical cancer, including many religious ones. The treatment they go through is one of the most difficult ones.. ):

  2. forever sad i skipped this vaccine. the people advertising it to my class said we could be having so much sex that now will be safe. we were a class of extremely religious girls who thought in unison "the amount of sex i want to have is 1, in 10 years, to my future husband" and out of 30 girls only 5 got the vaccine. i am now an atheist adult woman and even if i still don't have as many partners as the mentioned people advertised i could have, i want to take care of my health. but it's so expensive in my country for adults.

  3. i immediately clicked on this vid when i saw it's about hpv, but was kind of disappointed that the intro made it sound like it's dedicated to girls only, when it's so beneficial to boys too (im assuming the video focuses on cervical cancer but still). idk about the us, but where i'm from boys don't get vaccinated against hpv as often as parents don't think it's necessary 🥲 anyway, i'm back to watching the vid

  4. I got the guardasil vaccine right when it first came out when I was in 8th grade. I also got my first low level abnormal, HPV positive pap smear this year (im early 30s). The fact that I was vaccinated completely changed how my doctor wanted to treat the result. Sans vaccine, my doctor would have wanted to do a colposcopy (ouch, for those not in the know they essentially take a hole punch to your cervix) and pursue further testing. But since I was vaccinated, my gyn was reasonably confident it wasnt one of the dangerous HPV strains and reccomended that we give my body time to clear it naturally and retest in six months.

Compare this to a family member who was just a year too old when the vaccine came out. She ended up getting high risk HPV and has had colposcopies and LEEPs and all kinds of other painful procedures. And shes now at an increased risk of cancer for the rest of her life.

Six months later, i was in the clear. All hail the guardacil vaccine!

  5. When my older sister was about 2 years old she got the MMR vaccine and had a seizure that same day. My mom is a nurse and never expressed intense anti vax conspiracy views but she was very reluctant to do many vaccines for me because my sister did have a super rare reaction to a vaccine. She became very stressed since as a healthcare worker she understood the importance of vaccinations but she also lived through a very scary experience related to vaccines. I think whats very tricky about vaccine hesitation is that the discussion often feels all or nothing. Its hard for people like my mother to be taken seriously about a legitimate thing that happened since people default to thinking shes a conspiracy nut that thinks vaccines cause autism. (Which to be clear, they dont)

  6. One of my friends grew up in a much more conservative, religious part of the US than I did… I got the HPV shots at 13 y/o but she didn’t because her parents had the backwards thinking that it would “encourage underage sex”. Well, I’ve never had an abnormal Pap smear (15+ years later), but my friend had a concerning one and it turns out that she was positive for one of the really dangerous strains. She is so angry that her parents actively chose not to protect her from this. It’s horrifying, I feel so lucky and thankful to have parents who weren’t ignorant like hers!!

I feel bad for all of the teens these days who know better than their parents but can’t get permission to vaccinate themselves as minors— I know there must be many of them, since I saw lots of them on social media talking about this in regards to getting the COVID vax! Horrible.

  7. I didn’t get the HPV shot until my mid 30s bc when it first came out I was already out of the originally suggested age range. When they expanded the range my dr asked if I wanted to get it and I said yes. Thankfully I’ve always had normal paps thus far but I’m glad I was able to get these vaccines.

  8. i’ve been putting this vax off for years solely because it’s 3 different shots spread out over the course of weeks 🫩 i hate needles in my muscles lol just give it to me through an iv!!!!😩

  9. I wanted to get the vaccine at around age 20 but my doctor told me that it was to late to do so, without even verifing that I was already infected with HPV. Since I'm a guy the virus is less harmful to me than women but I would still prefer to not have the risk of giving it to my partners if I carry the virus.

  10. i'm very lucky that i come from a pretty liberal community where we all got the vaccine SO fast we didn't even hear the drama before 😂 later on we just thought people hated it bc it hurt soooo badly. anyway we didn't have any teen pregnancies or stds all around my school bc we also had health class lmao

  11. Vaccines are one of the biggest technological advances of the 20th/21st century and people (and governments!!) refuse to take them

Glad to live in a country whose public health campaigns have been not undermined by whatever causes this.

  12. I remember when this vaccine first came out when I was in high school, my mom wouldn't let me get it. At a different doctor visit when she wasn't with me I asked them to give it to me anyways, the swelling on my arm got pretty big but during the second dose it was perfectly normal. Really grateful to the doctor and nurses who understood I needed this vaccine.

  13. A relative felt that "if I let my daughters get the HPV vaccine, I'm basically calling them a wh*re. And that's bad parenting." They're conservative religious people & a sex-positive approach wasn't gonna get anywhere with them.

So I pointed out that not all HPV exposure is on purpose. Husbands cheat. Sexual assault is a thing. As a parent, we can't always be there to be protect our kids. But we CAN at least make sure that one tragedy in her life doesn't also kill her with cancer. That seemed to land ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  14. 6:25 why tell people to skip forward if they don't want to hear about animal studies in science and medicine. for whom are animal studies 'not their thing.' how can you understand a topic in medicine without understanding animal studies. Knowing that the rabbits with tumors, growths, and warts have a virus and that people with cervical cancer have genital warts is necessary to the reasoning linking viruses to cancers. Telling people they can skip that if they want is shortsighted.
