In 1950 an earthquake brought down more than half the buildings in Cusco. The colonial churches cracked and fell. The Inca walls they had been built on top of did not move. 🧱
🪨 The walls are dry stone. No mortar anywhere in them. Blocks of two or three tonnes, ground against each other until the faces meet so closely you cannot slide a blade into the joint
🔷 There is no single template. Stones have five sides, or seven, or twelve — each one cut to fit the particular stones already standing around it
🔨 The method was patient rather than clever. Harder hammerstones, pecking the face down a little at a time, lifting the block to test the fit, setting it back down to cut again
📐 And the shape of the wall matters as much as the joints. The face leans inward as it rises. Doorways, windows and niches are trapezoids, wider at the floor than at the lintel
🌎 In an earthquake that combination behaves well. There is no mortar to crack. The blocks can shift against each other and settle back. The leaning face and the trapezoid resist being pushed out of square
⛪ The clearest example is the Coricancha. The Spanish took it apart and raised the church of Santo Domingo on its foundation. The church has been brought down by earthquakes twice. The curved Inca wall underneath it has never come down

⚠️ Note: the popular version says the stones ‘dance’ and fall back into place. The seismic principles here are well understood and well tested, but the exact behaviour of any given wall is still partly inference. What is not in doubt is which layer of Cusco is still standing.
