Ever yell at the screen because the hero finally realizes they’re in trouble? That’s peripeteia and anagnorisis.
PLOTLINES is a new series from PBS Digital Studios that explores the history and cultural impact of storytelling trends, tropes, and traditions.

Luke was always skipping Dutch class on tatooine
Obviously in Lair Of The White Worm when Peter Capaldi finds out he wasn't given antivenom and will become another snake vampire and probably snakeify Hugh Grant.
Luke: "I knew he was a vader but I didn't think he was MY vader!"
I can't believe I first heard this term in Poker Night at the Inventory.
As described by Tycho Brahe: "It has to do with getting f@#$%d by a reversal of luck".
I reckon this is the best explanation since that one about goat castration
It's not strictly peripeteia, but the way that the killer sets up Brad Pitt's character to fulfil the last deadly sin (of wrath) in Se7en has this same sweet destructiveness.
Thank you for calling Aristotle a snob 😂👏🏻
I would say the very end of Final Destination 3 and Final Destination: Bloodlines.
ESB spoilers OMG
Two of my favourites in literature: Túrin discovering who his wife and the mother of his child really is in The Children of Hurin, and George discovering Curley's wife in Of Mice and Men. Both hit me hard!
The Children of Húrin
explains why i avoid all of this.
Yeah, Luke. Why didn't you do your Dutch homework, Luke? My exercises you should've done, young Skywalker.
Shame Luke never learned Dutch.
The plot twist's darker, aristocratic cousin: Peripeteia
Do they speak a lot of Dutch on Tatooine?
I cant
To be fair to Luke, there aren't a lot of native Dutch speakers on Tattooine or Hoth.
The ending of The Usual Suspects.
Zodiac has a great ambiguous one when the lead is interviewing a guy all alone and the guy lets slip a detail that reveals he might be the Zoadiac Killer. You can practically see the wheels turning in Gyllenhaal's face as he realizes he's alone inside the house of a potential serial killer.
Star Wars is ham-fisted. The names of the characters sound like they were written by a kid who got a C in English.
Star Trek is WAY better.
Aristotle? Isn't that the guy who thought the sun was cold?
