Not every U-boat the Kriegsmarine lost in the Second World War went down in battle. This Short covers four of the strangest losses of the U-boat war, from the Battle of the Atlantic to its final months.
In April 1945, U-1206 was scuttled off the Scottish coast after water entering through her forward toilet reached the batteries and released chlorine gas. In August 1941, U-570 surrendered south of Iceland to an RAF aircraft with nothing left to finish her off, and later served in the Royal Navy as HMS Graph. In May 1943, U-439 and U-659 collided west of Cape Finisterre while approaching an Allied convoy, and both sank. In February 1945, off the Norwegian island of Fedje, HMS Venturer sank U-864—bound for Japan on Operation Caesar—in what the Royal Navy acknowledges as the only time one submarine has sunk another while both were submerged.

U-110 am 09.05.1941: Enigma
U1209, 18th December 1944 collided with Wolf Rock lighthouse and sank because the inexperienced commander didn't believe the navigator and overruled him.
So clear what you meant was not stranger still with each progressive instance, but actually meant far less strange every time! Your complete and utter misuse of the English Language is truly baffling!

Zderzenie dwóch u botów na helu
W okolicach Helu ( Polska ) podczas II wojny światowej doszło do katastrofalnego zderzenia dwóch niemieckich okrętów podwodnych: U-272 oraz U-634. [1, 2]
My ex's grandfather commanded a destroyer escort off the coast of New York and accidently ran over a U boat. It surfaced, the crew was rescued and captured, and everybody lived to go home again.

Those 'flasks of mercury' remain there and some are obviously leaking. It's an incredible biohazard time bomb and nobody is sure how to deal with it now
Geschichten aus dem Paulaner Garten.
Incredible stories thanks for sharing 😁
“I hear splashes”
The aircraft that U570 surrendered to was from my uncle's flight of 269 Sqn (although he was away on leave at the time). I believe that the ensign is in the RAF Museum at Hendon.
Ray later flew on Liberators with 59 Sqn. His aircraft disappeared over the Atlantic in February 1944.
Lest we forget.
No one will ever know how many came here
Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
Although these German subs are of good size & complexity of engineering, they are quite small in comparison to navigating the largestest oceans & rough seas.. Truly nerves of steal & guts of the Bravest men deserve respect regardless..
U1206 was self sinking. The toilet was made up that they don't get treated as deserter in POW camps.
Wow, never expected too u boats to hit eachother in a big ocean
Due to the invasion and occupation of the Netherlands in May 1940 the Germans had captured 3 Dutch O boats under construction which they finished and put in their U boat service. However almost the entire Dutch navy had managed to escape to England including the Dutch O boat submarines that were in active service and of the same class as the unfinished ones that the Germans had captured and used.
In november 1941 the Dutch O21 sailing with a Dutch crew integrated in to the British royal navy was sailing at night on the surface back to Gibraltar after a patrol in the Meditereannean sea when it crossed paths with the U95 a German type 7C U boat which was also surfaced and awaiting a supply ship. The German captain who noticed from it's silhouette that the O21 was not a British submarine mistook the O21 for a German submarine and started making light signals to contact the O21 who then replied with 2 torpedoes sinking the U95.
The captain of the British Submarine Venturer was a genius mathematician and fired due to careful calculation, not firing blind. The mercury is still there and a great environmental threat.
Impact firce
Estimates , drawn up by Window view to the west, Cabin in the woods at 3500 meters above sea level,
Fascinating and Illuminating!!!!
Then there are the U-boats that sank when their own torpedoes turned around and struck them like one found off New Jersey.
“Hans, what ze Fuck”
Sunk while submerged by a submerged submarine! A helluva lucky shot I believe 😮
In April 1945, the war was lost; that was clear to everyone, including the submariners. So why should anyone die now?
Desertion is, of course, difficult, as is showing cowardice in the face of the enemy. So you simply let the toilet break down and flood the submarine, whilst all the crew members are rescued and survive the war.
Funny, because for the U-1206, I read that it was the captain that caused the sinking by not knowing how to use the toilet (it was a new system made to be used underwater)
