Didn't she have two camels living inside the house with her at one point? Baby and Princess. And didn't she run over a guy at the front gate in the driveway with her car, killing him? They never pinned anything on her.
I am a pianist and love the placement of the piano @6:28 near the windows, though I hate to see anything placed upon a musical instrument. I would have tried rotating the piano 180 degrees or -90 or -60 so the player gets a glimpse of the view. I published 2 piano 8 hand arrangements of major symphonic works and definitely would have had a twin grand interleaved with the current one and given concerts on Sunday afternoons with three other sight readers at 4:00 pm the Horowitz hour.

What makes it weird? All of the Newport homes reflect a time gone by, wealth that we will never comprehend. Rough Point actually is actually one of the more liveable homes (JMO) for all of it's vast size.
My favorite room is the grand staircase with its wood carvings, but I like the Morning Room and Pine Room as well.

We visited last November and the curator couldn’t stop talking about her friendship with Jacky O and her tobacco inheritance. I had no idea about her philanthropy nor did I know about I’m perplexed by why her supposed friendship wasn’t discussed in your video. With that said I did talk to the curator about your channel then and he didn’t know who you were. I was flabbergasted! I do hope you have had a chance to visit or at least speak with them.

Excellent video! ❤️♾️❤️ I was often at the Doris Duke Estates in NJ when I was younger as my aunt had rented a cottage on the property for a while. At some point in his younger years, my father had been employed in the Guardhouse there. I remember him saying she was nice enough if she trusted you. He never had an issue but others seemed to because they always approached her with a vibe that'd get her back up😅 Everyone always went on about how kind she was – even if a bit odd and reclusive. She didn't like people who she thought just wanted to befriend her for her money, but she was very generous with the communities and causes she believed in, for sure.
I'd love to visit Rough Point and take a nice long look at the Music Room🤩

I've only toured this house once after she left it as a museum. Before she died I remember not only seeing the camels from the Cliff Walk but also her arrival by helicopter on the back lawn. Her foundation also owns another house in Newport, the Federal style Samuel Whitehorne house, with her collection of Goddard and Townsend (Newport cabinetmakers) furniture. Excellent video.

I was amused by the table with a broken Formica edge and stackable hotel chairs in the kitchen.
My art teacher knew of an oil tycoon's wife, who liked to travel. She went to the forbidden city, was brought into a ruin, and a ceiling left in one, she loved the tiles, and asked if she could have six of them to be made into a coffee table, which she did. My art teacher had it after she was "done" with it, and he wanted a "new look" for his retirement , and couldn't even sell it for five grand. He took it to his new place and tried to build around that stupid table, and lived miserably ever after, lol

I visited Rough Point this time last year. After seeing the Gilded Age mansions I thought I could live here. It has the best views of any of them.
My favorite room, I believe was called The Atlantic Room. It was where she housed the two camels during the storm. Not the best place to be during a hurricane, since it was all large plate glass windows. 🙄 Ironic that the Duke Medical Center touted the fact that the building and grounds were 'tobacco free', when the money that allowed it to exist, was originally earned from the sale of tobacco.
At the risk of having an unpopular opinion, I’ve enjoyed the movie Bernard And Doris with Susan Sarandon as Duke and Ralph Fiennes as her butler Bernard Lafferty quite a few times.. the movie gives a lovely glimpse into the Phipps estate, Old Westbury Gardens used as her home. It will always be a favourite of mine. Doris certainly lived a very colourful life.
she was interesting. Read several biographies of her. She didnt treat her vast staff well. However she somehow completely trusted her last butler who was a horrible alcoholic and really had zero redeeming qualities. From what I can tell he hastened her death and the doctors administered excessive morphine at the end which hastened her demise at the butlers insistence.. He lived on at her house in beverly hills and was even wearing her clothes after she died. I dont know if he had remorse about what he did to her in the end but he left the 5 million he got from her estate as administrator and beneficiary back to her foundation when he died a few years after her. She had so many people in and out of her life and she would cut friends dead and never speak to them again. She also completely shunned any distant family members and had no children of her own except for the adult leech she adopted in her later life. Candy I think is her name ended up with about 60 million from the estate. Doris tried to cut her off without anything but it wasnt possible legally due to irrevocable family trust issues. She basically died alone surrounded by servants with nobody that had her best interest at heart. She was also a billionaire. Not a good recipe for a happy long life in her twilight years. Too many people wanted her money in the end.

Thanks Ken for featuring Doris Duke's house. I live not 10 miles from her NJ home and visited Rough Point in 2018. It's definitely an impressive mansion to visit. The setting is absolutely incredible!

Doris Duke led an interesting and kinda sad life. There's an old made for TV movie about her life that's worth a watch, just for the nostalgia of the Movie of the Week era.
