American: Comrade we would like to give you a zenith tv.
Comrade: we will reverse engineer this moving picture device
American: turn on the built in microphone, oh snap, I think they are opening the tv.

😮
Why would you say literally when "clunky" is a clear description that would not be mistaken for a figurative expression.
In the early 1960s my grandparents on my mother's side of the family had a Television with this type of remote. The one drawback was when the TV was turned off with the remote, it was always drawing some power to the remote receiver on the Television.
Some hearing aid remotes use this principal even today, altho they do it with a speaker and a roughly 15kHz sound that is hearable for younger folk.
I do remember this thing at a friends house. You could definitely hear it too.
I wonder with the advent of high Fidelity sound if the program one was watching would also cause it to activate certain functions.
My grandparents had a Zenith TV like that and I remember the keys jingling would turn it on and off or something like that.
Any way to get this thing to work on a modern smart TV?
Careful,
Charlie will wire up that new fangled gizmo to set off your own claymore mines!
Channel surfing with this was probably loud as hell!
We definitely went to the moon guys
My dad dropped his keys one day and changed the channel, so we would jingle keys to activate the commands on the TV.. 😊
we used to make cool things
This is why a lot of older people call it the "clicker."
Resonance 😢
I had no idea that those things were not electronic, even thought I knew they were ultrasonic.
I love this SOOOOOOO much. Almost Heath Robinson.
man physical clickable buttons is something I miss
And now Samsung puts mics in your TV. For a VERY different reason. 🎤
There’s some old person watching this rn thinking “well yeah duh”
Our TVs been listening to us since the 50s 🥴
Brilliant innovation
That’s why it was called a clicker
My boss had one of those back in 1976, when we in the UK had never even seen a remote. I was fascinated with it as I could see into the front end, which had four circular objects. Amazing concept.
That's why the old cartoons had a big chonky tv remote.
Buzz Lightyear to star command, come in star command
It’s amazing what they thought up in the mechanical age to accomplish stuff like this. Ingenious.
