  1. You only use putty for those metal tubs or the heavy ass older ones. You use silicone for the plastic tubs, thats how the plastic tubs crack at the drain hole is due to overtightening with putty results in cracking the plastic tub.

  2. Plumber’s putty is the traditional choice for sealing a bathtub drain flange. It’s easy to shape, seals well, and stays flexible. However, it’s oil-based and can stain or damage some materials (like certain plastics, cultured marble, or porous stone).

100% silicone caulk is recommended if the tub or drain manufacturer specifically says not to use putty (common with acrylic tubs, stone, or composite surfaces). Silicone provides a watertight seal but is messier to work with and harder to remove later if you need to replace the drain.

✅ So use plumber’s putty unless:

    The manufacturer instructions say otherwise

The tub or drain material can be stained or damaged by putty

    In those cases, use silicone.

  3. I've been used silicone on several drains over the years applied like this gentleman did here in this video …. never had a leak or any other issue… tried plumbers putty, never again… will always use silicone.

  4. I highly recommend never to use silicone unless you plan on replacing it every year because just because it’s silicone and it’s made for tubs doesn’t mean it’s permanent but also the contracting and the constant movement of the house will break the silicone sealant. I highly recommend using plumbers putty that’s what it’s for. Yeah you have to replace it every couple of years if you’re lucky but it’s a lot easier to replace and reuse the tub drain with plumbers putty than it is silicone.

  5. It's great that you share all these tips with us! regarding this video, to apply silicone is always indicated in the instruction or you also do if not indicated as an extra insurance, in the instruction of my bath drain kit nothing is specified related to apply silicone. Only to apply the rubber seals in the right place.

  6. Something my journeyman taught me

“Anytime you think it’s enough silicone, PUT MORE!”

You can just wipe the excess away with a wet finger. More is better than less and then having to rip it apart because of a leak.

  7. Every time I go to do a repair on a tub or a bathroom sink and they use silicone it always has mold around the silicone 💯. Stop trying to replace the plumber’s putty with silicone. It has been working fine for years why try to reinvent it with silicone it’s a breeding ground for mold 💯.
