We tried to figure out why it’s so hard to delete a David’s Bridal account.

When my friend Kim tried to delete her David’s Bridal account, she ran into a strange problem. Online, the dress retailer didn’t have a way to delete an account. Phone calls with customer service were a dead end too. She reached out to see if I could figure out what might be going on. What followed was a months-long runaround that took me behind-the-scenes of personal information retention, data brokers, and exactly how much a dress company can know about you.

Godspeed you! Black emperor tshirt spotted!
This is what places like Planet Fitness do. They make it extremely easy to sign up but nearly impossible to delete or end a service. To leave planet fitness not only do you have to PAY to buy your way out of the contract you have with them but you have to go to the physical location closest to you to close out your membership and there’s no guarantee the person you need to speak to will be there. I got sick shortly after joining and never got to go due to long periods of pain, haven’t been able to end my membership and I now owe them $300 because I couldn’t physically make it to the location to cancel and now I owe them so much money that I’d have to turn around and pay that plus the $50-$60 to buy my way out yet I’ve never used that membership once. I’ve blocked them from being able to charge my card but the bill just racks up…
This dude needs more subs. Come on guys!
Europe has GDPR…
As a programmer, I know exactly why Kim's info didn't get deleted. It's a lot of work to specifically delete all the data attached to an account, and that kind of work is going to fall at the lowest possible priority for those with the skills and knowhow to actually do it, assuming there actually is anyone who has those skills and knowhow still employed by the company. Most companies don't want to spend thousands of dollars worth of developer time to figure out that kind of complexity, and instead hope that some kind of hack like an "inactive" or "deleted" flag will be good enough.
it should be illigal to not have a delete button
Somehow I have a sneaking suspicion the owner of the company may not be called David, but a random indian name.
You can always check in but you can never leave…hmm 🤔
I'll say it again and again: we need a national law that makes privacy and opting out the norm, and forces companies to ask people to opt in. The law should prevent companies from aggregating and selling data on people. And it should create right-to-be-deleted and right-to-be-forgotten protections to everyone. California privacy laws are an okay start (maybe) but put the onus on users to opt out, and you have to go through a tedious process for EVERY website and EVERY interaction. And they don't go nearly far enough.
The US badly needs GDPR!
Bro how do you edite so good and smothe can you teach me plz.
David's scandal
6:22 This same thing happened to me on 23andMe. It stopped letting me login with my email but when I tried logging in directly through my email without a password but a link to my email.. It worked. My account and dna profile are still there.
In my company we can't delete accounts but we can remove all contact information completely..
I found a new Mandella Effect. You claim the roach motel motto is "Roaches check in, but they don't check out." I remember the saying as "Roaches check in AND THEN they check out." (ie. they die). The reason why I know I am not misremembering is because when I first saw the commercial, the flip in wording confused me – If they check in and out, then it's just a motel. I didn't immediately catch the play on words.
Once in a few short clicks I accidentally created a duplicate LinkedIn account with my work email. I deleted the account 10 times but any time I followed a LinkedIn link, it reactivated the account. This went on for years. I trained myself to remember to never click on anything that could sent me to LinkedIn at work, but once in a while, a hyperlink would fool me and I’d be back to square one. I finally left that job and I think I’m free. 😅🤞
Im scared of a future were AI can pull all this together and impact my insurence, jobs, applications, government, etc
omg your NordVPN ad in the middle of you video shows us how much you actually care about the subject. ridiculous.
MLM.
this voice on other side of phone remind me of scammers from india…maybe Iam wrong , but this voice…
So they decided that only now in 2026 that they were gonna follow CCPA when it's been in effect since 2020?!?!?!?!?!?! This should actually be reported because there are fines for not following CCPA. https://cppa.ca.gov/announcements/2024/20241217.html
All YouTube ADs are scams. Do NOT buy anything you see advertised!!!
What a shthole company 😂
Disliked for not disclosing the start and end of an ad specially on a channel that tries to show others bad practices. In some countries that's against regulation
oh this isnt about Linkedin?
Thankfully we have GDPR here in the EU. It includes the right to be forgotten (mandatory opt-out option everywhere).
I lost access to an email I used to make a tiktok account. Tried hard af to regain access and delete it, they absolutely refused to let me get in and said they could and would absolutely not remove the data of the profile, despite being able to prove it was mine. Would love help with that
This is why I won’t use most of my perks on T-Mobile. Most of them require you to create an account. I’m just done, and you would have to offer me a hell of a lot more than a free sandwich, drink, etc.
Sign in and change all the important information. This way they are selling the wrong info.
I experienced the same thing after joining a mailing list with an author.
I'm still trying to have my email deleted and removed from the mailing list, years later.
The only solution was to block it and report the email as spam.
US not having privacy laws moment
If you go into a store to schedule an appointment or on the phone do they force you to give an email? Like, they won't or the system won't schedule without that field filled in?
“We can’t delete your account! What if you need us again?”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence on my marriage!”
Same with the Northwest Registered Agent
Soft deletes are essential though for keeping ledgers and accurate transactional history…
Others may be secondary…
There are a lot of website's you can't delete your account from.
in the EU they have to by law. same in UK.
After registering on LinkedIn, I got thousands of spam emails.
This guys voice…..
