What If You Lived a Googol Years?

A bus hits you at 40 mph and folds around you like a soda can. Not a scratch.
You can’t age, you can’t be hurt, and you’ll stay this way for a googol years: a 1 followed by 100 zeros.

Your best friend Nick bets you $20 that you’ll break eventually. So you test it. You skydive from the edge of space with no parachute, let lightning hit you, and walk on the Moon in a hoodie. Then the years get bigger. You ride the Earth into the red giant Sun, sit beside the last star in the universe as it goes out, outlive every atom, and watch the black holes evaporate one by one. A trillion years in, your progress bar still says 0%.

But a googol isn’t the end of the story.

Would you take the bet? Tell me in the comments.

THE REAL SCIENCE (best current estimates, all approximate)
• Googol = 10¹⁰⁰
• ~5 billion years: the Sun swells into a red giant. Around 7.5 billion years it probably swallows the Earth.
• ~100 trillion years: the universe runs out of gas to make new stars.
• Black dwarfs: not one exists yet. The universe isn’t old enough.
• Proton decay: Super-Kamiokande in Japan has watched 50,000 tons of ultra-pure water for decades. If protons decay at all, they last at least 10³⁴ years.
• Hawking radiation (1974): a black hole as heavy as the Sun evaporates in about 10⁶⁷ years. One as heavy as 100 billion Suns takes about a googol years.
• The ending is based on Roger Penrose’s Conformal Cyclic Cosmology. Penrose won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics, but most physicists don’t accept this idea.

An animated “what if” story. Time scales are simplified for the story.

  1. The detail that got me was Nick pressing that $20 into his hand at 91, knowing he would never see the payoff — and then the progress bar still reading 0% after a trillion years. That contrast between a very human goodbye and a timescale that makes it meaningless is brutal in a good way.

  2. 10^34 is ten decillion. It would be boring with nothing to do for so long. Seeing everyone and everything die would be depressing. It would be easy to forget about how old we were, when it comes to big numbers. We can then see that living forever is an inconvenience.

  3. The length of that lifespan is so inconceivable. A human conscience would fold into itself in a fraction of that lifetime. Just to break up the monotony and not go crazy, counting individual sands on every beach. Or, the estimated number of letters of every printed word in history.

  4. This is AI. there is so many channels using this style and I’m getting tired of it. Channels like this that are (usually) created a few weeks ago, and they say that “oH iT’s AcTuAlLy CoDeD iN bLeNdEr” well that was AI IMPORTED INTO BLENDER. It is sad that we have to normalize AI video creating that (usually) takes a few hours while REAL creators take up to a few DAYS to YEARS. And, even if you say “but AI didn’t exist back then!!1!1” well Geometry Dash content has existed since 2013, Minecraft since 2009/2010/2011, and these usually get a few things wrong. The AI style just spills the tea that this is AI. Maybe try some real animation and coding, like Scratch? I animate on scratch, and you animate with AI. next time, don’t use AI.
