It’s May 17th, 1944. Using a few days of good weather before month of monsoon starts, four P-40N fighter-bombers from 89th Fighter Squadron part of the famous Burma Banshees – flew over India-Burma border to provide support to Allied troops that were in bitter fight with Japanese Army.
They were in the middle of the bombing run when a least 15 Japanese Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (translated as Peregrine Falcon) attacked them. During the ensuing fight the commander of this flight Lieutenant Philip Adair lost sight of all the three of his allies. Instead several Japanese fighters tried to get on his six and bring him down. Hopelessly outnumbered, how could the 4 friends possibly survive? Thank you very much to the family of Lt Phil Adair for reaching out to use with this story and providing us with his audio.

The rugged P40 was one of my favorites from world war 2, especially the Flying Tigers !! What a group they were
P40は米軍機でも1番好きだな。癖がないからな。
Grateful for these American pilots aiding us against the invading Japanese. It took everything for the country to fight them back. May the world be at peace. Also the landscape is done beautifully and very accurately. Been obsessed with this channels videos lately.

逆に、「ビルマの桃太郎」こと穴吹智曹長の場合、P40を撃墜した時の乗機はなんと97戦。
既に旧式化した97戦でP40を撃墜した彼は、のちに隼になってからは単機でP38、B24群に突入してP38を2機、B24も撃墜。最後は弾薬切れで体当たりで撃墜。
熟練搭乗員にかかると性能差を腕でカバーしてしまう。
また、田形竹尾准尉は真戸原軍曹と2機の「飛燕」を駆り36機のグラマンF6F群に突入。
「飛燕」の性能を活かし格闘戦と一撃離脱を繰り返し、自身はグラマン3機撃墜、真戸原軍曹も1機を撃墜。
30分を超える空戦で最後は力尽きるも、2人とも不時着して生還。
当時グラマンヘルキャットの搭乗員は「飛燕」を発見すると、しめた、負けない、と感じたそう。
やはり腕が勝敗を決めると思えてならないですね。
