Aliko Dangote plans to build a 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery on Kenya’s northern coast in Lamu. If completed, it could reduce Kenya’s dependence on imported fuel, supply several neighbouring countries and transform Lamu into a major energy hub.
But why did Dangote choose Lamu over Mombasa and Tanzania? Where will the crude oil come from? And what does Kenya have to offer to make this enormous refinery profitable?

If you ask me I think Dangote is trying to save Nigeria from the terror of the West by reducing the attention Nigeria get to Kenya aswell. That way if they hurt Nigeria we will not collapse as there will be a Kenya, Glory to God

What I can not comprehend is why won’t Kenya extract their own cos it’s already visible in some areas?
Could it be they have been warned with those ruling the world?
There is more than meets the eye this scheme is assigned just to make the oil tycoons more richer and powerful ,I believe it functions same way the pharmaceutical companies functions all associated with power,control ,influence and what not.My point is it doesn’t make any sense cos we have our own oil in Kenya which can be extracted and consumed to benefit mainly East Africa,the government knows it and also those ruling the world !
The conditions don't sound too good. Pretty sure China or even Russian can offer the same but leave the market open for where the oil comes from, hence keeping prices low the the people? Because how it is now, there isn't a lot of advantages to it?
Not many Kenyan households use kerosene for cooking. Many households can afford cooking gas, only that the price for gas was affected too.
this refinery is not about Kenya only is for east Africa, Uganda,Kenya,Rwanda,Ethiopia will have shares and crude oil from Uganda and South Sudan

This is awsome for Kenya! it seems its pretty unrealized that most investment in Africa is just into raw resources, in order to build up an economy in the modern day and age you really need manufacturing, raw resorces helps, but manufacturing those raw resorces into goods is what really makes the money.
I have serious reservation about the ordinary people benefiting from all this. He will sell more oil and that's it money will not go to Kenyan government it will go in the vault of Nigeria. It will be good if Kenyan government take even minority share in the project 30- 40%

If you ask me, that 3rd demand is a bit of an overstretch from Aliko. Coz tell me why we Kenyans would be interested in shifting the power to him to determine price fuels from the strait of hormuz? Because that's what he's basically asking for; for the gov to lock out competition through this anti dumping policy he demands for. Let the refinery exist with all the support it can get from the gov but not locking out other suppliers. They can all co exist in a market that Aliko will have already been given to dominate to a large extent against the 'cheap suppliers from russian and India. We are trying to move forward here my friend

Unfortunately Tanzania are building their own too. 2028 Kenya is reviving the government owned refinery. Dangote is goning to get proper competition.

The oil refinery is just one piece of the puzzle. There's a plan to build a new technologies called New Lamu. The city will be Africa's answer to Singapore. The city will have a capacity to host 10 million people and majority of the people will come from Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Congo. The Lamu Port has 23 berths capable of having about 60 big ships be they oil tankers, cruise ship or Cargo ship. By 2035 there'll be 96 berths at the Port. Export and Import business will run from Lamu. Crude oil will come from South Sudan which wants to opt out of the Sudan pipeline because they have a focus on refining their oil but don't have the capacity so Dangote's refinery is a blessing. Also there's offshore gas reserves on a strip of Indian ocean which a few years ago was a point of conflict between somalia and Kenya. So Dangote's refinery will have plenty of supplies. Uganda has built their own refinery called Hoima and there's crude oil in Northern Uganda. But as we develop these refineries we must remember that the world is turning to green energy and electric engines for cars, manufacturing etc. So how valuable will petroleum produced be in the long-term.

We need oil refineries but we also need to make sure the oil produced isn't going mainly to Europe but to service current domestic African demand and fuel industrialisation across other energy demanding sectors like electricity, steel and machine production etc. Let Europe get its oil from USA, Africa should decouple from them

just asking if the refinery wont make fuel cheaper then what is it for ? I know most will say it will raise the economy but economy revolves around fuel if fuel goes up than what it is now, goods will automatically increase. Dangote needs to check his terms . I mean its up to the people to either choose premium fuel or cheap fuel not some rich guy creating his generational wealth
