Why I’m Rethinking What I Build to Sell

What if you could build beautiful furniture without using a single screw, nail, or drop of glue? And what if that same woodworking technique could make selling larger furniture projects online a whole lot easier?

In this video, I’m stepping outside my usual small woodworking projects and building a freestanding wooden bookcase using traditional tusk tenon joinery. This unique woodworking technique uses wooden wedges to hold everything together without any metal fasteners or glue.

But here’s where things get interesting! Because of the way this furniture is constructed, it can be completely disassembled, packed flat for shipping, and reassembled by the customer without needing a bunch of tools. That could be a game changer for anyone looking to sell handmade furniture on Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, or through their own woodworking business.

I’ll walk you through the process of making this four-shelf wooden bookcase, including cutting the mortises, shaping the tenons, making the wooden wedges, and finishing the project with a beautiful dark walnut stain. And, of course, I’ll share some of the mistakes and challenges I ran into along the way. Because apparently, I can’t make a woodworking video without a few of those! 😂

If you’re looking for woodworking projects that sell, profitable woodworking ideas, DIY furniture builds, traditional woodworking joints, or creative ways to make money woodworking, this project might open up some new possibilities.

Sometimes the best way to move forward in woodworking is to borrow a few tricks from the past!

Let me know in the comments what you think about this type of knockdown furniture. Would you consider building and selling furniture that doesn’t require screws, nails, or glue?

Now let’s get to building!

  2. You description and humor makes this video AWESOME!! You inspire me every day to get into the garage and build. Thanks and keep up the GREAT work.

  3. I can't screenshot the cut list because stupid affiliate links keep showing up on top of it. I've tried twice to watch this video and I'm about to just give up on it.

  4. The only reason you're not getting anyone else's sticker is because no other professional woodworker would watch your channel! I'm just teasing because I know how willing you are to laugh at yourself, which is probably what brings us all back. We're all learning. I probably would not have attempted this project. I'm still trying to master straight lines!

  5. Typical that the dimensional lumber isn't the same size. That protractor tip is gold man. I need to get me one of those. Maybe I'll have my grandson lift one from his classroom 🤔Great tip using the scrap block with line to line up the speed square too! Did you mean the two forsner bit holes looked like 👀this emoji? But for some odd reason those holes made me think of the number 80085. I don't know why…

I just saw your last video got A MILLION views! WOW brother, congratulations! This was another great build. I don't have a lot of time to watch many 25 minute videos but I know that I'm going to see a great build and learn something when I watch yours man. I hope your wife and family know that you are a national treasure!

And you would be the most loveable cartoon walrus!

  6. I just wanted to say, thank you for all of the details! This episode was very educational, with what to do, and what not to do. Speaking for my wife, who watches your shows with me, she likes it because you show your mistakes, when making something and also what to do, to avoid someone else making the same mistakes. Being retired military, and her a military wife, we both fully appreciate your humor. Thank you, from both of us, we always look forward to your next adventure!!!

  7. @4:50 – When using a protractor you need to have the center point lined up with the spot where the shoe and the blade intersect. Technically you were about 1/8" too high (which would throw the angle off a little) – but it was probably close enough for government work.

  8. Fixing our mistakes is a part of the job. I think I would've shorten the shelf until the extra part of the hole was under the vertical board. The shelves would be slightly smaller. Really came out nice tho. Congratulations.

  9. My 8 year old learned a new word today watching this with me and it wasn't fart because he's already th me master of that one.

Badeer, he laughed and when I explained why it was used it it stuck. I'm sure by end of Monday it'll spread across the third grade. You might actually end up being cool in grade school lop

  10. .If you want to make anything from a build like this, then you need to rethink your work process. At the moment you are doing everything one at a time, so you set up for 8 slots, 8 shelf ends and so on. You need to invest time into creating some jigs and use a router to cut the slots (which will also eliminate the breakout issues) At first cut all the boards square on the edges, make the notch a little short on the inner edge. Then clamp a number of boards together and set the table saw to 5 degrees and make the angle cut. Again a simple jig will eliminate most of the setup.

Likewise a 5 degree fence attachment on the table saw and you could run out the wedges an no time. Clip on 5 degree guide, make cut remove guide make cut etc. Careful planning and you c an arrange it such that the 5 degree guide also acts as the width gauge as well.

Regardless it's still a lot of work and only viable if you intend to make a lot of the same thing.

Another good tip is to get a roll of lining paper or smooth back wallpaper and draw out your boards full size and make sure that everything fits as intended.

At least you should be better at chisel work and sharpening!.

Nice result apart from the stain (I've never liked dark stain on wood, but that's just me
