This video looks at why Wayne Rogers left M*A*S*H after only three seasons. When the series began in 1972, Trapper John McIntyre and Hawkeye Pierce were intended to function as equal partners. They shared the Swamp, performed surgery together, challenged authority, and formed the comic center of the 4077th.
As Alan Alda’s Hawkeye became increasingly popular, however, writers began giving him more of the strongest comedy, drama, and character development. Rogers felt Trapper was slowly becoming a supporting player whose main job was agreeing with Hawkeye or handing him a drink. He also believed promises involving money, billing, percentages, and creative opportunities had not been honored.
Rogers had objected to parts of his proposed contract, including a morals clause, and the paperwork was never completed. That surprising oversight allowed him to leave between the third and fourth seasons. Although the studio reportedly pursued a breach-of-contract case, Rogers could point out that no signed contract existed.
Because his decision came after filming had ended, Trapper never received a proper farewell episode. In the fourth-season opener, Hawkeye learns that Trapper has been discharged and races to the airport, only to miss him. Mike Farrell then arrives as B.J. Hunnicutt.
Rogers later said he did not regret leaving. He continued acting, starred in House Calls, and became a successful investor and financial commentator. His departure changed M*A*S*H forever, ending the early partnership that had helped define its first three seasons.

I believe “Hawkeye” became the crazier funny one because his character was single….trapper was a married father(in the ‘50’s) just my 2 cents
The guy who played BJ was too self-conscious and was not well cast in that role. The first three years with trapper, John were the best.
I haven't watched MASH but will try season one this weekend.

Wayne and Alan still saw each other after Wayne left the show. it was never anything personal between those two. they always remained friends.

Wayne Roger's as trapper was way better then Mike Farrell as Bj honey cut and Larry windmill was a other unreplacable mash character Winchester No good terrible

Wayne Rogers wanted to be Alan Alda's equal. Then Mike Farrell came in and got what Wayne wanted. In the end Wayne got screwed.
Except for the 1st 3 years I couldnt stand mash. One of most of overated shows of all time.

I loved the first 3 seasons of the show n as I got older I did notice Trapper become the sidekick instead of the partner but I still loved the duo,as for BJ I enjoyed him in the beginning ( seasons 4&5) he was more the undercover prankster n did his stuff alone n straight faced to were no one knew it was him doing it but the the show turned more serious n that's when I went from loving it to just liking it Hawkeye went from joker to just a wise ass but all n all still a good show
There were reports that Wayne Rogers left MASH because the best lines were mostly given to Alan Alda. So Wayne decided to opt out of his contract and seek other opportunities. Those were the best episodes. Mike Farrell was no replacement for Wayne. 👎
