🔥 In just a few seconds of quenching, the internal structure of the steel changes dramatically – martensite forms and the blade gains its hardness.

When the heated blade is immersed in quenching oil, heat is rapidly transferred from the steel into the surrounding medium. The oil around the blade heats up instantly, creating vapor and bubbles that can be clearly seen flowing along and surrounding the blade.

But the most important process is happening inside the steel itself.

During sufficiently rapid cooling, the austenitic structure transforms into martensite. The arrangement of atoms within the crystal lattice changes, and it is this martensitic structure that gives hardened steel its high hardness.

However, heat treatment does not end with quenching. Freshly formed martensite is extremely hard but also contains high internal stresses and has reduced toughness. The blade therefore undergoes tempering, where the desired balance between hardness and toughness is achieved.

🔥 What looks like just a few seconds of bubbling oil is actually one of the most important stages in the heat treatment of a blade.
