If you’d like to learn more about what, exactly, was broken with Sonic R’s lighting engine and how it got fixed, InvisibleUp wrote about the process:

Tutorial:

Step 1: Install Sonic R. If “install.exe” won’t work, try “setup.exe.” If neither work, copy all files and folders from the CD and paste them in to a folder somewhere on your computer.

Step 2: Run the Sonic R Updater. When it asks you for a folder, tell it where you just put the Sonic R files.

Step 3: When the Sonic R Updater finishes, it will launch the Sonic R Mod Manager. In the Mod Manager, bring up the “Graphics” tab. This is mostly up to your preference, but I’d uncheck “Windowed” and “Force 4:3 Aspect Ratio.” In the drop-down menu to the right, select “Native” to set the game to your monitor’s resolution. Or, if you want, you can leave these options alone.

Step 4: I’d also recommend installing one of the sound mods listed above. You only need one, so don’t install all three at the same time. Place the mod’s folder in your Sonic R mods directory. If you still have the Mod Manager open, you may need to click “Refresh” to get the mod to show up. Check the box next to the mod to enable it, then click “Save.”

Step 5: Launch Sonic R, but head in to the options first to set up your controls if you think you need to. If you’re using a controller, I’d set “Action” (Jump) to the A button, “Accel” to the X button, “Camera” to the Y button, “L Brake” to the left bumper, and “R Brake” to the right bumper.

Step 6: You’re done! Play the game!

  2. I know this game gets a lot of hate, but I love it now and I used to love it as a kid.

I really with someone took the concept of open map on a racing game with secrets to find and all that, and make it new and better implemented or something. But my main issue with the game is the lack of maps, I cannot imagine how much I would have played if there were more of them jsjsjs

Thank you so much for the videoo

  3. this video saved me money lmao got it downloaded just gotta figure out how to setup my ps4 controller with it 🔥 crazy how expensive this game is on the Saturn you might as well just get the PC version haha

  4. I would a love a remaster/sequel to this game, terrible controls and all. As a kid, I was blown away by the exploring the stage aspect of this game, and was convinced if I could find just the right place to jump, I could escape the level and explore the areas shown in the background. I used to spend hours in the balloon hunt mode trying to do that lmao

  5. I played sonic r on the gems collection for the first time today

    thanks man!

  6. Thank you so much for the guide! Got the game files and did all the stuff you said to do and it fork pefectly!
Such a blast to play this game for the first time in 2025 xD

  7. Hi again, I was wondering do you know how to get this game to work properly with steam input. I mapped 3 players to Joypad 1, Keys 1 and Keys 2. I would have the 4th player using Joypad 2 but the controls get messed up with steam input used. Thanks! Also, Happy new year!

  8. thanks for making this video, I remember playing the heck out of this in gems collection on the ps2 back in 2006. Always wanted a modern way to replay it and this is definitivly the way!

  9. I was introduced to Sonic R as a kid. I found it at a used game store we used to have here while looking for games for the Saturn that I purchased (it was 2009 or smth. I thought it looked cooler then the PS3 lol) and I recently came across a PC disc for it which I didn't even know existed. It's going to be great reliving my childhood again!
