Why Africa’s Richest Man Is Betting $16B on Kenya
Kenya imports every litre of petrol, diesel and jet fuel it consumes. Now, Africa’s richest man is proposing a $16 billion mega refinery that could completely reshape how East Africa gets its fuel.
Aliko Dangote plans to build a 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery on Kenya’s northern coast in Lamu. If completed, it could reduce Kenya’s dependence on imported fuel, supply several neighbouring countries and transform Lamu into a major energy hub.
But why did Dangote choose Lamu over Mombasa and Tanzania? Where will the crude oil come from? And what does Kenya have to offer to make this enormous refinery profitable?
This documentary explores the engineering, economics and geopolitics behind one of Africa’s most ambitious proposed infrastructure projects—and the major obstacles that could still prevent it from being built.

Should African governments protect a refinery so it survives, even if drivers pay more? Yes or no.
If you ask me I think Dangote is trying to save Nigeria from the terror of the West by reducing the attention Nigeria get to Kenya aswell. That way if they hurt Nigeria we will not collapse as there will be a Kenya, Glory to God
Kenya imports crude oil then refines it in Mombasa oil 🛢 refinery
How I wished Dangote invested that money in Nigeria crude oil production. Nigeria would have been better for it.
Nice presentation bro,new sub from kenya.
But does Kenya have Crude oil 🛢️ ?
I think you don't know kenya has oil under its belly in northern part
Hey, I don't know your name but I found every bit of this documentary as well as the other one about Ajaokuta fascinating. How can I support your channel pls? Well done!
Kenya refines oil
Most Kenyans no longer use kerosene to cook. They use LPG gas.
great work man, keep making such videos
What I can not comprehend is why won’t Kenya extract their own cos it’s already visible in some areas?
Could it be they have been warned with those ruling the world?
There is more than meets the eye this scheme is assigned just to make the oil tycoons more richer and powerful ,I believe it functions same way the pharmaceutical companies functions all associated with power, control ,influence and what not.My point is it doesn’t make any sense cos we have our own oil in Kenya which can be extracted and consumed to benefit mainly East Africa, the government knows it and also those ruling the world !
The conditions don't sound too good. Pretty sure China or even Russian can offer the same but leave the market open for where the oil comes from, hence keeping prices low the the people? Because how it is now, there isn't a lot of advantages to it?
Not many Kenyan households use kerosene for cooking. Many households can afford cooking gas, only that the price for gas was affected too.
this refinery is not about Kenya only is for east Africa, Uganda,Kenya,Rwanda,Ethiopia will have shares and crude oil from Uganda and South Sudan
good research work, everything is on point💯👍
This is a great move for East Africa not Kenya, imagine what Uganda will make from those crude oil, the numbers of jobs been produce in Kenya, with energy sufficient
This is awsome for Kenya! it seems its pretty unrealized that most investment in Africa is just into raw resources, in order to build up an economy in the modern day and age you really need manufacturing, raw resorces helps, but manufacturing those raw resorces into goods is what really makes the money.
I have serious reservation about the ordinary people benefiting from all this. He will sell more oil and that's it money will not go to Kenyan government it will go in the vault of Nigeria. It will be good if Kenyan government take even minority share in the project 30- 40%
Your videos are one of a few I watch from the beginning to the end, well done!
Why are you using sad music in the background
Dangote is doing his best to industrialize Nigeria. Don't y'all think so?
Kenya used to refine it's oil till gready leaders stopped it for kick backs in import. … Check out kenya refinery
Kenya is on another level, and we had a refinery.then again our market capital is the largest.
If you ask me, that 3rd demand is a bit of an overstretch from Aliko. Coz tell me why we Kenyans would be interested in shifting the power to him to determine price fuels from the strait of hormuz? Because that's what he's basically asking for; for the gov to lock out competition through this anti dumping policy he demands for. Let the refinery exist with all the support it can get from the gov but not locking out other suppliers. They can all co exist in a market that Aliko will have already been given to dominate to a large extent against the 'cheap suppliers from russian and India. We are trying to move forward here my friend
everyone is going electric why is this good?
bcs he's African & wanna see africa strong and independent …hehehe just saying
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great video…..much love from 🇰🇪
Man have your flowers🎉 the narration and everything else is on point
Unfortunately Tanzania are building their own too. 2028 Kenya is reviving the government owned refinery. Dangote is goning to get proper competition.
Your knowledge on Kenyan dynamics is deep, better than most of us
The oil refinery is just one piece of the puzzle. There's a plan to build a new technologies called New Lamu. The city will be Africa's answer to Singapore. The city will have a capacity to host 10 million people and majority of the people will come from Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Congo. The Lamu Port has 23 berths capable of having about 60 big ships be they oil tankers, cruise ship or Cargo ship. By 2035 there'll be 96 berths at the Port. Export and Import business will run from Lamu. Crude oil will come from South Sudan which wants to opt out of the Sudan pipeline because they have a focus on refining their oil but don't have the capacity so Dangote's refinery is a blessing. Also there's offshore gas reserves on a strip of Indian ocean which a few years ago was a point of conflict between somalia and Kenya. So Dangote's refinery will have plenty of supplies. Uganda has built their own refinery called Hoima and there's crude oil in Northern Uganda. But as we develop these refineries we must remember that the world is turning to green energy and electric engines for cars, manufacturing etc. So how valuable will petroleum produced be in the long-term.
THIS attitude starts for many men before 60.
When i tell you that your research, knowledge and zeal is on another level. Now you should believe me bro that soonest your craft will speak volumes and bring you into the sitting rooms of Prince and Princesses as far as in-depth Journalism is called. Continue to do what yoh are currently doing if not more. More grease bro. Calm, soft, gentle BUT with loads of wisdom and knowledge in your delivery of your work. Salute
Interesting they chose Kindiki, considering he’s the next president after 2032.
big mistake. we have a transactional proffessional thug for a president. right place wrong timing for Mr Dangote.
Your Videos are mega well done and very Informative. You inspire me. I'm a following.
We need oil refineries but we also need to make sure the oil produced isn't going mainly to Europe but to service current domestic African demand and fuel industrialisation across other energy demanding sectors like electricity, steel and machine production etc. Let Europe get its oil from USA, Africa should decouple from them
Your videos are always very informative and on point. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy watching them
just asking if the refinery wont make fuel cheaper then what is it for ? I know most will say it will raise the economy but economy revolves around fuel if fuel goes up than what it is now, goods will automatically increase. Dangote needs to check his terms . I mean its up to the people to either choose premium fuel or cheap fuel not some rich guy creating his generational wealth
If Africa can such giant investment in aviation manufacturing automobile manufacturing chemical manufacturing electronic manufacturing machinery manufacturing house appliances manufacturing steel manufacturing…Africa will become a manufacturing powerhouse
correction the decision to build a refinery in East Africa was president ruto he is the one who went out to look for investors given that kenya has oil too, dangote was the was one who agreed,
This is why US is Colonizing Venezuela. Because of petrol dollar
Every Africans should praise Dangote because he is pushing Africa industrialization. As most Western countries only focus on controlling our resources and Majority foreign investments in Africa are still about controlling resources. Dangote said Africans must invest in Africa cause nobody is investing in Africa
I thought the Ugandan and Kenyan president with Dangote agreed to build the refinery in Tanga, Tanzania!?
Your videos are usually very informative. Kindly add time stamps
