The word ‘democracy’ gets thrown around a lot, but everyone seems to mean something different when they say it. What IS democracy? What does it actually mean?

Now I understand why some say that the republican party is what the democratic party used to be.
3D printed pieces Spectacles-style… well played 😉 Great work!!
democracy seems to me like a life, we seem to understand it until we sit down and think about it deeply
My six points for democracy:
1) The people vote
2) That vote matters
3) That vote is cast without coercion
4) Anyone within a broadly defined group can vote
5) The result of that vote must be accepted by everyone
6) You must have a way to determine a winner (plurality, majority, etc.)
That's all democracy is in my eyes, everything beyond that gets into types of governance, rather than the concept of democracy.
What a great showcase of what democracy is. Thanks for the brief look at this topic.
Thanks for the video, very good explanation
Beautiful
Democrat was originally an insult, the idea that the people could rule themselves laughably naive. Maybe it still is to many degrees and extents. It's under construction. Hurry up!
yeah I watched a wad of youtube videos and I don't get stuff either. another youtube video should fix it
Nordic model > other democracies. Knowledge is power and when most of the citizens are well educated and and think critically what they see and hear = No Trump or Putin as leader.
THAT IS WHY REST OF THE WORLD GET IT FROM YOU!!!
good to have a constitution as barriers to the wolves
It's really not that complicated: all you need for a democracy to exist is free & fair elections… all those other elements might make it "better", but at the end of the day the are not requirements of a democracy.
How do you make it work while corruption is legal? None of these options will work in a corrupt system
Woooo
Democracy is not elections! That's why we are ruled by oligarchy! Sure it includes them but you cant have democracy only via elections. 6th century Athenians protected democracy from oligarch wealth and power through sortition and citizen juries and citizen assemblies and mini public consultations. Sortition is lottery! By an actual authentic crossection of the public. We can pay these representatives child care and a wage while they are helping with direct decision making and or policy decisions, for a cycle and negotiate time out of their employment. It is evidence based that the public make good decisions. Participation is everything in democracy! Civic Education is mandatory and so should voting be. Australia uses mandatory and preferential voting system much higher than first past post which is ineffective.
Free press and media independent of corporations. Free market capitalism is so deregulated that it is consuming itself and all else!
Thanks for explaining Liberal democracy and egalitarian democracy. And deeper into practical applications deliberative democracy citizen assemblies.
So long as there are class/ caste systems democracy is moot!
Voltaire!!!
America, you have my sympathy. You truly are doomed.
Especially when it comes to ecology, you can't just hand power to the common man. That would be disastrous.
40:35 oh, de Brede Maatschappelijke Discussie over kernenergie in NL (1982.1984)
30:16 which is, btw, the biggest problem with direct democracy in Switzerland (apart from the fact that I'm paying taxes for over 25 years but not allowed to vote)
Not your best video Johnny. This one was kind of boring and a little too meta
The biggest problem that is currently killing the most people is 'how do we determine the geographic areas where the decisions made democratically are enforced'.
If I have a carpooling group where we decide where to go to lunch, and we swing back and forth between restaurant 1 and 2, but then we get more people in the group who prefer restaurants 3 and 4 because the larger group results in an economy of scale to save gas. But the result is that only restaurants 1 and 4 ever get chosen as the compromise, and the people who prefer restaurants 2 and 3 have suboptimal results. And if restaurant 2 and 3 ever did get what they want, they would be harming the most people by going against the majority preference. And maximizing harm for the most people is the exact opposite of the moral claim to democracy's existence and what the process is supposed to achieve.
In the example, the people who prefer restaurants 2 and 3 can just leave the group and make choices that suit their preferences to maximize the good for themselves even if more gas gets used by splitting off in another car. But in real government wars have been fought because groups tried to split off to do their own thing, forcing people like in groups 2 and 3 into suboptimal conditions.
16:04 the majority can vote to take away your rights
For a country to be a democracy, I think the only reasonable metric would be to measure how government aligns with the opinions of people. That can happen in multiple ways, it doesn't have to be the traditional western electoral democracy. In fact, I would argue that by that measure many western "democracies" are not actually democracies. This was actually measured by Princeton University in 2014, they found how much policy correlates with public opinion in the US, and to no ones surprise, the correlation was negligible. What was highly correlated however was policy and the opinions of the very wealthy. So is the US a democracy? On what grounds? That you get to vote out the guy who's not doing what the public wants for another guy who doesn't do what the public wants? To me, it seems to act more like a vent, to channel frustration against the "other guy" rather than against the system.
Low info voters are a problem. Maybe as large as problem as partisanship.
Democracy is very effective at local scale, the issue is when you scale it up to a country. Federal government was never meant to be this powerful when America started.
It’s a buzzword. It’s used because we know what we’ve been told, and that is a word that is considered “good”.
In truth, democracy gives power to majority rule, completely making the minority opinion disregarded. If the general consensus is one thing, objectively right or wrong, it becomes the “right”.
This is where propaganda (aka, the media) finds it incredibly important to portray THEIR opinion as the majority’s opinion. It’s why having a parliament (a group of minority parties ruling) CANNOT work in a true democracy, because nobody is the majority.
"Democracy means you shut up!" Had me rofl so hard xD
Love how the 4th type of democracy got avoided. Like uppps yeah the US is just a shitty version of democracy compared to this other group of countries 😅
There is a very good video by spectacles about the greek democratic lottery system, if you are interested.

Bro, is this fucking adult Dora, walking your audience through fake discovery like they're a kid who can't handle being told the answer? You're pulling apophenia by design, engineering the audience into "finding" a conclusion you already had before the camera turned on.
I know exactly what psychology this is. Earned Dogmatism Effect: audiences forgive certainty from an "explorer" that they'd reject from an expert, because experts are assumed to have "earned" the right to be closed minded, and closed minded reads as biased. Columbo effect: appearing naive and unthreatening lowers people's guard faster than competence does. Peripheral route persuasion: when you don't come off as an authority, people stop scrutinizing your argument and just vibe with you instead.
And in your case it's not even hypothetical. You read an advance copy of Klaus Schwab's Stakeholder Capitalism before the public did, then pitched the World Economic Forum, the same institution Schwab founded, to sponsor "How China Became So Powerful." They paid you. You then performed a "curious guy finding this out live" journey that landed exactly where the book you'd already read wanted you to land, timed to launch alongside WEF's own Davos Agenda PR push, without the paid promotion disclosure YouTube's terms require.
That's not naivety selling a worldview better than expertise. That's a paid spokesman wearing a naivety costume, using the psychology of trust in curious amateurs to smuggle a client's argument past an audience who thought they were watching someone figure it out in real time.
Good video, but why the Russia checklist (Putin = bad?) It makes me wonder and takes away from your credibility. 😢

Life is not business because no fish asked to be eaten even if it’s the strongest the big blue whale still able to eat em. Why search for the meaning of life instead of living it?
13:58 😂😂 Nepal and srilanka and african countries.? Do u think they have electrol democracy please i think u have to reconsider that map and do analysis about the political history of that countries
38:24 I don’t know about that Mr. Bonnelli
I believe that electoral democracy should be decentralized to communities, and merit should decide the progress of individuals.
