Why the Navy Built the F-14 and Could Not Keep It

The F-14 Tomcat was the United States Navy’s fleet interceptor: a two-seat jet with a wing that moved from 64 feet to 38, a dash past Mach 2, and a radar built to hold a carrier perimeter. This film follows that airplane — what it did, what the wing and the back-seat radar were for, and why the same complexity ended its Navy career in 2006.

A1986 film made the silhouette familiar. The jet had already been at sea for 12 years. Official Navy figures and a Government Accountability Office snapshot show the reach, and the hangar bill that came with it. Subscribe to Jet X-Press for more films on the aircraft that shaped carrier aviation.
