Scientists mapped every neuron in a fruit fly’s brain. So I put it in Minecraft and tried to teach it how to farm.
This got way further than I expected.
The mod, the fly brain and everything I used to train it are open source, if you want to mess with it yourself:

pls like & sub this took me so long to make i never want to see minecraft wheat again

5:35 256? Does this mean fruit flies have an 8 bits brain
Should try to teach the fly brain to talk using signs.
With so many encoders and decoders being trained outside the brain, I don't really feel like the brain is doing much of anything. The level of logic needed here is probably solvable simply with a 2 layer neural network, so I'm not sure the fly brain is actually meaningfully adding additional power that the encoder/decoder isn't doing by itself.
I wonder what would happen if this brain was installed in a drone. The mayhem that would cause, absolutely hillarious.
You what.
Can we please get the unedited successful run? It would be so interesting to watch a fly's gameplay
This was sent to me by my in-law and I subscribed immediately after watching. The sheer effort, patience and determination that you showed in this project is admirable to say the least, and groundbreaking!
I learned a LOT from this video, and feel you would make a fantastic teacher!
Absolute Peak Quote of the year😂
"It's a Fly, i'm not teaching it how to use a mouse" 😂😂😂😂😂
fruit fly with over 25 days of experience in psychology here, this video is super accurate and I'm 100% sure that if a fruit fly was stuck inside Minecraft, the exact same thing would happen.
23:44 Not sure if I'm imagining it but the little waver of laughter when you say "looking after a field that already existed" made me giggle
Fruit fly brain doing thing memes are go crazy dude 😭
Omg please do Wii Sports Tennis vs a second fly I am begging you
How to make a more complicated bot than it needs to be. With the power of 1% of a flies brain. So this is clickbait. You dont need to map its neurons, just code a bot with the behavior of a fly, simple.
Teach it to forage for food in Minecraft since that should be what it's best at, right? Figuring out what it should and should not eat? It would be funny if you could make the fly carnivorous
The fly wants a reward for it's hard work. Clearly now that it can farm wheat, next step is to get the rest of the stuff and to make and eat a cake.
That might be a bit ambitious as it would need to basically do the same as here for just getting sugar but egg and milk should be easier assuming the animals are given to it along with the bucket.
Next, teach one brain decision making on the tasks learned and you have an autonomous wheat machine. After that, give the decision brain a way to ask for a new skill so you know when it is lost. Then build an investigator team of flys to try stuff around the new thing so they can build the new skill for one observer fly. From there build an army of fly-agents to do everything for you.
This is continual learning in practice lol
That was fascinating. Next time teach the fly to play Doom.
Now run it one one of those human brain cell supercomputers
Forget ai. Its capable of rudimentary functions, but nature has all kinds of insect brains that can b optimized for all sorts of simple repetitive tasks. We dont need every part, but certain relay systems r more useful that others.
just wanted to let everyone know this entire video was made by AI
the entire video script is ai generated (makes frequent usage of the rule of three, hedging and softening vocabulary, and multiple instances of the classic ai "its not just x, its y")
its not just the script the entire video was edited by AI since it has the signature Descript [ai video editing software] grey background along with every image thats a rectangle on screen has its corners smoothed and a slight drop shadow added to it and a very subtle dark grey outline which Descript does by default. if you look into a lot of the visuals with the neural cues too there are lines that dont connect to anything and a lot of small things which just dont make sense so generative ai was used for visuals as well
furthermore, the amount of coding knowledge necessary to pull off a python script that can translate neural cues into video game actions would take literal years of coding experience. I find it hard to believe a channel which isnt even focused on technology or computer science can pull something like this off without a massive team…. or AI
Wait a few years, we'll have a downloaded human brain running our bots
Al generated script…? Either that or you really, really sound like Al.
enslaving flies to farm for you is peak
great video !!
I had this exact discussion regarding learning in a gaming server just the other day. You can show somebody a tutorial but that doesn't mean that person can apply what they've been shown in any situation that isn't the one they're now familiar with.
This is amazing. Well done man. Incredible work.
A copy of a fly's brain, given brain damage, conditioned into doing a specific task, and put on Minecraft afterlife.
This timeline is crazy.
Why not make a human brain instead?
Maybe we can enslave other bugs to help the remaining Bees pollinate are crops before they all go extinct after all. I mean,.. we dont seem to care to stop using pesticides on them so a compromise must be made.
Love this video. My only critique of it is that you keep mispronouncing asterisk and it hurts my soul
Can it suffer?
Very interesting
Username checks out. Kinda.
Its a fly im not teaching it to use a mouse 😂
Bot brain farms more bot 🧠, then we are doomed, simple evolution.
Small suggestion: Predictive Coding, Test-Time-Training, and Artificial Dopamine Simulation. Also, is the script Artificially Generated?
