A 9-week-old golden retriever named Sarge is now part of Defiance City Schools, providing emotional support and training as a detection dog.
Sarge works with Student Resource Officer Adam Kunz to help students feel safer around law enforcement. The English cream golden retriever currently offers emotional support during the school day and will later train to detect explosives and narcotics in Indiana next summer. The Defiance Police Department and local VFW partnered to bring Sarge to the district, with the VFW covering the $3,000 adoption cost. Officer Kunz emphasizes that K-9 programs reduce student intimidation while improving overall school safety and building trust.
