Saudi Arabia’s 1,000m Tower Stacked 50 Floors On Rotten Concrete—And It’s Failing

Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower was engineered to reach an unprecedented 1,000 meters into the sky, but restarting construction after a 7-year pause has exposed a critical structural engineering challenge.

For seven years, construction halted abruptly at Floor 63. During this extended shutdown, exposed rebar and concrete surfaces were subjected to extreme coastal weather, intense desert heat, and high-salinity air from the Red Sea. Now, as new concrete pours resume and engineers prepare to stack an additional 50 floors onto this aged joint, questions arise regarding structural integrity, cold joint shear strength, and differential settlement.

Resting on an innovative piled raft foundation over porous coral rock formations, the kilometer-high skyscraper operates on razor-thin tolerances—where uneven foundation settlement of just over an inch could severely stress the entire concrete core. Can modern forensic engineering and structural remediation ensure the safety of the world’s tallest megatower, or does building directly onto a 7-year weathered core pose an irreversible mechanical failure risk?

In this deep-dive engineering analysis, we explore:

The Floor 63 cold joint and saltwater corrosion mechanics
Structural challenges of pouring fresh concrete onto aged, weathered surfaces
Deep foundation engineering on Red Sea coral bedrock
Wind vortices, vortex shedding, and lateral shear forces on a 1-kilometer megatructure
How mega-scale construction restarts handle hidden structural defects

  1. In Bible times, there was a mighty hunter in opposition to Jehovah God. It was under his direction the Tower of Babel began. He wanted to make a tower so tall that its top will reach all the way to heaven. God suddenly made them speak different languages. Since they could no longer understand one another, they stopped the building work. 😊

  2. PS, I sit corrected! I apologize to my Arab friends! Should have known it was an American and all for a freaking title!!! And whoever built the one in Dubai is Evil cause this means that they knew before they built it that there was no sewage infrastructure! Y'all did know that, right… no sewage infrastructure, fact check me! They flush the skyscrapers toilets at night in dump trucks and go to the ocean or the desert!

  3. I think it's a combo of Texas Tea, Petrol dollars, the heat and the too tight turbins on their head that messes with the frequencies and wi fi affecting their cognitive function or here in the Texas Panhandle, Stupidity with a side of Pride!😂

  5. HAS ANYONE FIGURED OUT THE ISSUE OF A ((( FIRE ))) IN A BUILDING THAT HIGH — THEY COULD NEVER EVACUATE THE PEOPLE FAST ENOUGH — CAN YOU IMAGINE THE ELEVATOR SYSTEM THAT HIGH AND THE FIRE SURGING UP THE ELEVATOR SHAFTS – THE STAIRS WOULD BE JAMMED .

  6. We (u.s.) have spire envy. Face it we (u.s.) are yesterday's news. the Arabs do not cut corners. These structures have a invisible purpose. They are mosque or temples reaching to the heavens.

  7. More money than sense or brains. Both of these Arab skyscrappers are on a ticking clock. They will both collapse. The Burg is already on the way. There will be no rescue from these buildings. In a fire, you are trapped if the elevators fail and the stairwells are blocked.

  8. If you were the lead structural engineer on this project, would you have approved pouring 50 new floors onto that 7-year weathered seam—or is continuing construction simply not worth the risk? Let’s hear your take below
