MPC4000, Z4 & Z8 Q-Link Deep Dive: The features that were left out of the manual!?



This video dives deep into the Q-Link features that are present in the last Operating System, version 1.71 which don’t get a thorough explanation in any manual nor addendum.. they’ve literally been flying under the radar for 20+ years with no more than ‘internet chatter’ about ‘what’ or ‘how’ they work.

Evidently, certain screen-shots in the don’t look like the screens inside the v1.71 system.. but don’t take my word for it.. take a look for yourself! ..there’s vastly different layouts across a bunch of features.

So, I decided to go deep down the rabbit-hole and try unravel the mystery of the MPC4000 Q-Links! after all, it IS the first MPC to bare Q-Links, yet.. I rarely see any one use them.. and even if you wanted to get the best from them.. there’s nothing around to actually describe them.. not in detail anyway.

This exposé should also offer some insight into Q-Links in other Akai Samplers that also have them too.

If you’ve never dabbled with Q-Links, it should open up a whole new bunch of tricks for you that’ve been lying dormant all these years.

AMPLITUDE
AKA Volume / Gain / Level.

PAN
Left & Right stereo Panning.
(Stereo Outputs will be required for this to function as intended).

PITCH
AKA ‘Tuning’.

LFO1 RATE
LFO2 RATE
LFO Rate is the speed of Low Frequency Oscillation for either LFO1 or LFO2.

LFO1 DEPTH
LFO2 DEPTH
LFO Depth is the intensity, or strength, of the Low Frequency Oscillation for either LFO1 or LFO2.

LFO1 DELAY
LFO2 DELAY
LFO Delay represents how much time is ‘paused’ before either LFO starts oscillating
from the moment of Note-On.

Cutoff & Resonant Filters.

  1. Wow What an Amazing video, this should blow some heads, who thought they had it all sorted out. So basically you have only 6 Qlink available simultaneously to you at any given time, for example if I want to control on the send page Qlink one for it to be program Volume, CC7, I can not have another parameter to be controlled by the same Qlink on the Receive page correct, so you only have 6 at any given time.?
