  3. Pretty well according to my GA instructor at the time, former Tomcat pilot. Good instructor; I asked if flying Tomcats was as enjoyable as it was portrayed. He replied: "YOU BET".

  4. I love your videos! However small correction to the engines: the first turbine stage powers the high pressure compressor, the other two power the low pressure compressor on a different shaft. Also the air is pressurized by the aerodynamic forces of rotor and stator. As pressure increases the volume for the same mass of air gets smaller. That's why the channel the air goes through becomes increasingly smaller. Also only a small portion of the compressed air is burned in the combustor. The bigger part is used to shield and insulate the surrounding metal as burning kerosene will melt the engines components

  5. The F-14 empty weight grew to about 44k…(with gun ammo included) max trap weight grew to 54K. These are A model numbers but I believe the B had the same rough empty and max trap weights. And yes, those GE 110 engines were a huge improvement over the original PW TF-30's. MGTOW was almost 70Klbs but I never in operations remember any carrier MGTOW above 67Klbs…as it reduced bring back gas available to land at max trap of 54klbs. Ex: 67Klbs with tanks is just under 20klbs of fuel…so no fuel weight is now 47klbs…so max trap fuel weight is about 7klbs. (Assumes 3K in weapons weight-but in DS we carried about 5k of weapons weight). We always knew our T/O weight…as provided this weight to CAT launch personnel on carrier….and we always knew our Max trap fuel weight…as we needed to land at 54klbs or less. So…DS max trap fuel when carrying 5k of ordnance, give we brought it all back, was more like 5k of fuel remaining.

Little side note and more of a nerdy detail: In the configuration that you chose the Tomcat could only carry 1 Aim 7 Sparrow in the "tunnel" between the engines as they where set one infront of the other. So it would be 2 Aim 54 in the front mounted to the phoenix pylons like you did and one Aim 7 in the center behind the two phoenixes. She could carry 4 Aim-7s only of the front two phonix pylons where removed then she would have 2 Aim 7 mounted nex to each other where the phoenix would be and then the other 2 in the center behind it.

I have known about the F-14 for decades (and it is one of my favorite aircraft of all time), but I learned more about it over the past 46 minutes than in all of the rest of my life up until I started watching this! Make no mistake… The F 14 may be an old school fighter, but it is still a bad mother fucker !!!… Sure it can't do what a 4th or 5th generation plane can do, but this big son of bitch can lay down some serious firepower, and haul ass!. Just like the F15, and F16. Yeah they're old school but can still fuck shit up!.. Especially the new eagle platforms, and the F18 super hornet. Old school can still get the job done.
