I visited Bangla Bazaar in Orangi Town, Karachi, to discover what makes this neighborhood famous for its Bihari BBQ and traditional food. What I found was completely unexpected.
Bangla Bazaar is not the glamorous side of Karachi. The area is old, crowded and visibly underwhelming, and seeing its current condition was genuinely disappointing. But then came the food — and the famous Bihari BBQ completely changed the experience.
In this video, I explore the streets of Bangla Bazaar, Orangi Town and taste its famous Bihari kabab, juicy beef boti and traditional BBQ served with chutney and crispy accompaniments. The smoky charcoal grilling, rich spices and unique Bihari-style preparation make this one of the most interesting street food experiences in Karachi.
The story of this food is also connected to the Bihari community and the migration of people from Bihar and other parts of India to Pakistan, as well as the wider history and cultural connections between Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Indian subcontinent. Bihari cuisine has developed its own identity in Karachi, and Bangla Bazaar is one of the places where that food culture can still be experienced today.
