Born Second, Officially Older. Blame the Clocks

Every November the clocks go back an hour. In 2016 that hour made a baby officially older than the brother born before him. Nobody made a mistake.

Cape Cod Hospital, Massachusetts, Sunday November 6, 2016: Sam was born at 1:39 a.m. His twin Ronan arrived 31 minutes later, which should have been 2:10. But at 2:00 a.m. every clock fell back to 1:00, so Ronan’s birth certificate reads 1:10 a.m. On paper he is 29 minutes older than the brother he followed into the world. A maternity nurse with more than 40 years on the job said she had never seen it happen.

It happens again this Sunday: US daylight saving time ends Sunday November 1, 2026 at 2:00 a.m., when clocks go back to 1:00 a.m. and the 1 o’clock hour runs twice (Hawaii and most of Arizona sit it out). The law: 15 U.S.C. 260a, “ending at 2 o’clock antemeridian on the first Sunday of November of each year.” In March the clocks jump the other way, from 2:00 straight to 3:00 a.m. (Sunday March 14, 2027), so that hour never shows up on any birth certificate.

So who’s the big brother: the kid born first, or the one the paperwork says?
