Five minutes in, I wanted out | V/H/S/MIXTAPE (2026)

I’ve uploaded this video 3x because I kept finding errors. Someone please fix Premiere Pro goddammit.

Five minutes into V/H/S/Mixtape (2026) I wanted out, and ninety minutes later I was still sitting there, so the only question worth asking about this found footage anthology is whether staying was worth it. Six directors, mostly musicians, exactly one career filmmaker. Two segments that aren’t found footage at all. A wraparound fronted by GWAR that almost nobody is defending. Every segment in this thing is somebody’s favourite and somebody else’s reason the franchise is finished. I go through all of them, say which one I’d sit through the whole movie again for, and tell you who should watch this and who should run. Spoiler-free.

  1. Hey, Robin here.
Everyone has different taste, and I can understand that.
But I would like to clarify that I DON'T USE ANY KIND OF AI in my works. I am a independent 3D artist and musician, and I have been making short films in the cosmic horror genre for several years now – with open source 3D program blender. My movies take a lot of time, work and devotion to get done. In an era of cheapy slop, Art theft, AI-generated content, and an unfortunately bleak outlook for the future of the big film industry, I will always stand by my decision to keep AI out of my films, projects and art.
And I can tell that there is nothing more insulting or disheartening to me than the assumption that my work was created using AI. So i would be happy to get that clear.

  2. I never wanted to shut something off so badly before when I watched that Gwar opener. But man… The Music of Mr. Sze, Death Tone, and I'll give the Cabin one a little positive vibes, but those were the absolute highlights.

  3. I looked at the runtime while watching the film and seeing I was only half way through, gave a ''fuck me'' out loud. I did think the Lovecraftian story was fine and the last story wasn't so bad (though not found footage). But in general I think this is the worst one so far. Was a real trial to get through. The wrap around was nonsensical and annoying. I miss when V/H/S was really nasty and felt like a snuff film (the first two). Shudder seem to want to make it a goofy comedy almost. Tongue in cheek, winking at the audience humour completely undermines the whole appeal of found footage. That it feels REAL. Everything being played tongue in cheek highlights it isn't real. Completely at odds with the concept of found footage.

  4. It's the worst V/H/S. It's beyond amateurish, and nothing lands. I had high hopes after V/H/S Halloween, which was quite good but this year's entry is a complete disaster. This is the first one I actually regretted watching.

  5. This just didn't feel like the year to do something so experimental. The world is hell at the moment and I just wanted to escape into some good old fashioned horror but instead they gave us this ridiculous nonsense. Totally bummed me out.

  6. It’s definitely the worst VHS and what really pisses me off is I told my new gf about the series this summer and we were excited to watch the new one and I just looked like an idiot for hyping that trash smh

  7. I think opening with the GWar bumper they opened with was the biggest mistake. Most of the others were fine. Crude and gross yes, but the first one is the only one i considered to be excessive.

  8. Even when I was an edgy 90s teen, Gwar didn't appeal to me. That opening segment in Mixtape was so gross and creepy, but I thought the puppet show segment was okay and the stop motion "Another Cabin" was cool. I stopped watching after that though. Maybe I'll finish the rest tonight, maybe I won't.

But I will say this – I don't think the point of this installment of VHS is about "found footage" per se. I think it's more like weird stuff you'd find channel surfing late at night, almost more like an analog horror. I was really excited for this change, but it really let me down because it couldn't decide if it was found footage or analog.

  9. Gotta be honest when the opening of the movie started i immediately knew that it wasn’t gonna be good at all. And I’m a massive fan of the V/H/S films I was so excited for this film and it just left me with utter disappointment. I just couldn’t stand The wrap around I liked some of the segments but it doesn’t help how bad the movie was. Dance, Dance, Dance was pretty catchy ngl lol but still it’s very disappointing.

  10. I don't see why it's "Controversial." It's pretty straight forward. It was the worst Wrap Around segment in the history of V/H/S and there were about 3 good segments. The puppet segment, the Lovecraftian monster vs Violin segment and the Serial Killer music segments were the good ones. The rest I could do without.
