Dell made swappable lid covers for their Inspiron laptops in the early 2000s, and of course, one of them being a burled woodgrain means I had to have one. But then it turns out the 600M is pretty sweet in both its features and design! And with parts still being rather common and affordable, it was fun to quickly gather up a buncha goodies and fix this one up.

Our school used these back then, the non wood grain of course. Remember the first time the laptop cart was rolled into our classroom. Did I mention WiFi!? Felt like the future. I feel old. Take me back!
I love it when you review old laptops! These are, without a shadow of doubt, the kind of retro tech I like the most. Though, I'd love if you were to get more into old ThinkPads from that time—as far as I'm concerned, these are the peak of x86 laptops. Always have been, always will be!

This looks so similar to the Dell Latitude D600; is it basically the same just with colorful touch-pad buttons, keyboard and swap-able lids? Also I really wish laptops still had that level of connectivity!
Need to change the CPU out and see how it benchmarks with the faster chip, switch out the old hard drive and such.

I never used this generation but I have nostalgia for the Pentium III models. They ran Win2K and were pretty damn solid. Also the first PCs I installed WiFi cards in when it was still 802.11b

Dell also made a larger dock that included a Dell D/Bay and a pci slot. I used to have one back in the day. I had a tv tuner card in there and a second optical drive. Crazy stuff back then

This reminded me of the Latitude D610 that got me through my nursing program. Dell made workhorses back in the day and even then the parts were relatively inexpensive.
even tho LGR i always be like billy core is the dell restore disk for windows XP that way it installs the drivers like i do with my IBM/Lenovo M52 Thinkcentre 8215-D9U and works well for a fresh OEM install of XP

These laptops where legit back in the day, I remember running GTA San Andreas on a later revision of this laptop. My brothers and I would huddle around this thing with a few controllers plugged in and running multiple copies of that one monster capturing game in emulators.
A satisfactory cleaning job on good equipment in its time…
insane how well equipped some of these laptops were. they werent cheap though, even without that inflation. thats a chunky price tag. but a swappable CPU? nuts.

Watching this reminded me why I used to buy the XPS machines instead 😅 Inspirons were very much an office duties line
I worked at an indie PC repair shop for awhile during the Great Recession; I worked on a lot of these AND the Latitudes. These were clearly designed by someone who knew they'd have to repair them again…I assume they fired that guy, given how impossible laptops are to service these days.
I'm playing max payne on slightly newer dell latitude with linux installed and got it working after few days of tweaking. Pretty laggy because I've got no gpu😂
The check marks are for the Hardware you Have. It does the same for my Beloved Latitude d830 With Nvidia 110 Nvs Gpu. I modded mine to where the NVS gpu will never fail..
My very similar d610 laptop has the issue, where the inside rubber pads melted… including the long ones next to the screen. What can be done with those? Any replacement available?
it is all nice about swapping WLAN or WWAN if possible, but dell, ibm/lenevo/hp compaq had nasty habbit to use bios whitelisting, so flashing whitelist remove modded bios was first thing to do – if possible.
Just the right amount of thermal paste. Kudos for not showing what that looks like and spending months dealing with the comments. 🙂

I have learned to trust a spinner over any ssd. Ssd gets hot and you can lose everything. Dell did sick with proprietary power supplies though. Mine had a core2 put in it and it was speed crippled until I got an official one with an ID pin in the center of the plug.
Hoflation has been out of control for decades.
Deep nostalgia for this guy, especially seeing it all taken apart to reveal easy maintenance, had one of these from the same line (with the basic grey color scheme) that I played an UNREASONABLE amount of dc universe online on as a young teen. (Making heavy use of the external monitor options, of course) I'll have to rustle one up someday!
These were great machines for the era. This was around the time I started working in IT. These Dells were built like tanks and the engineers beat the crap out them, yet they still ran! We could easily tear them apart and swap out parts from a broken one to another. They were so easy to work on!!
