I think it's best to water in before covering with straw. At least for the first watering.
One question: how do you deal with the pests? Grubs are a big deal in soft soil.

Don't know about you, but where I'm at snakes and insects love to live and hide in straw, so I do not recommed laying straw everywhere.
99% of the time Straw on ground is a HAVEN FOR MICE.

I feel 6" ie 15cm is too narrow a distance between potatoes. I'd do at least 8" or 20cm. Im an experience gardener of 47 years

How deep to plant, and best soil temp ?
Large rotten potatoes yes😅. The straw will keep the soil too damp, encouraging fungal growth. The straw is an ideal place for pests like mites, rodents etc

Where i live, you almost have to use straw or mulch because there's so much clay, which turns hard as a rock in the dryer months.

Can you plant potatoes 🥔 in raining 🌧 season…I try and mine everything turn to dust…what will be the problem…though I use sacks to plants them
