Microsoft says you can turn your Xbox discs into digital licenses for free so I bought a stack of used games and found out how many actually work.

  1. Would have been nice if you tested what happens when that digital licence is then claimed by somebody else. Sure, this all looks great now but this is just the soft approach to Sony's hard stance. No doubt in my mind, there will come a day when that digital licence kills your disc altogether. There is no future world where Microsoft wants you to be able to own a digital licence and the physical disc of that one game. This will inevitably kill the second hand market and we will all be forced to purchase games that would have been $5 in a gamestop for $20+ through their digital store.

  2. I dont think people have realized how much storage has gone up the last 12 months…if you think you can afford all digital gaming, you will be sadly mistaken when the time comes. Just getting a 2TB drive for a PS5 will run you the price of the console itself.

  3. 6:02 See, this moment when you test if you get a digital licence for Forza Horizon 3… That's where I have a bad feeling about this feature…
Alright, let say I get all the digital licences I can using all my physical copies. And I move on to.the next generation of console, fully digital with no disc player. And then, Microsoft, or any editor, decided to remove games from the online store. I might lose access to those games, with no solution to play them anymore…
I don't know, everyone is ecstatic about this disc-to-digital licence feature, but I feel it to be a Trojan Horse to convince us now to stay in the Xbox ecosystem, and trap us later…

  4. This is good; I have a Series S, and I plan to buy cheaper second-hand Series X/S or One games just to activate them on my older Xbox One so I do not have to put up with the digital hell of pricing on my Series S.

  5. This feels like a sneaky way to actually completely kill your physical media long term. Because if these servers go down that tie the disc to the "free digital copy" now those discs associated with this method are now just trash. This is 100% a trap to actually kill off your old physical media.

  6. This was mostly exactly how it was going to work, oddly. It was up to the publisher to support it or not… and you could toss either the physical disc or transfer the license temporarily to a friend to play. So in a way this is more restrictive than what the FAQs and interviews post E3 announcement indicated.
They just really, really fu**ed up the communications on it. This is the reason this system works; it was built into the last 2 gens of consoles… just not the first pressed discs (because of blowback). They would be really boss if it was like Steam where the entitlement wasn't related to stupid things like rights and publisher saying OK. If you can authenticate the disc because you physically have it in your drive, its always good. Cant authenticate the disc because of no network connection? Then offline local only for you.

  7. My understanding is that this can't be done on playstation. The unique serial numbers encoded on xbox discs are a relic of the original DRM from the launch xbox one that persisted into the current gen. Ironically, Sony's focus on being consumer friendly when the PS4 launched could very well be the reason they can't match Microsoft's consumer friendly move here.
