I may be showing my age here… I remember the days before sudo… and as such I find it a pain I rather temporarily switch to root with su – and after I have finished doing my admin tasks I close that cli and fall back to main user, using the '-' ensures your logging into root with root's environment properly applied as if you logged in as root… switching with su without the '-' doesnt, I do this even on distro's that don't allow it by default and force users to use sudo instead.. I just sudo passwd root to enable this, anyone who is on the sudooers list can do this.. – this isnt best practice folks and wouldnt do it in a production environment but its one shell running only as long as needed and not rooting the whole system.
