Living in China changed the way I travel

I used to travel like a tourist, but China has totally changed me. I would search out landmarks, almost as if there was a checklist to complete, and I felt like didn’t really see the place unless I saw those.

But after 8 years in China, I stopped visiting places, and started looking for stories.

I found out about King Qian Chu from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period of China. The way he ruled his people shook me to the core. I learned so much about conquest growing up, byt rarely anything about sacrifice. In this video, I briefly touch on what he did, and show some areas in Hangzhou that still honor him and his family. If you guys want a deep dive video, let me know.

I also stayed at one of the fanciest hotels I’ve probably ever stayed at, and attended a world family banquet hosted by them for the Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival is a time for family reunion, and although we started as strangers, we ended the night feeling a little bit like family.

I got to talk about my story that led me to my love of China, which heavily involves my husband. Let me know if you guys are interested in hearing about this as well!

Coming to Hangzhou for Qian Chu’s story and getting to tell my own made me feel like this country, with over 5,000 years of history, is full of hidden gems and surprises every corner you turn. And that craziest part, my story is unfolding before me in a way I never would have guessed in my wildest dreams when I was younger. In learning about this place, I have learned so much about myself, and continue to do so.

Let me know how China has impacted you, and if you’ve found out something about yourself along the way in your travels~

The Qian family remained prominently and influential over the centuries. Decent famous descendants including Qian XueSen, a co founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Father of Chinese Rocketry.

  3. King Tai of Zhou ,1100 BC is a similar story. Upon harassment by NorthWestern nomadic tribe, he refused using his soldiers to defend his region, thus saving loss of many young men’s lives n instead brought all his people to move eastward. 古公亶父. I wished one modern days country could have done what King Tai did.

  5. great story but heartbreaking to sully this history with generative ai 😞 it is responsible for so many people losing their homes and land both to the server farms and the climate impacts so it feels very sad and ironic to me to use it to tell another story about protecting people's lives in their home using a tool that takes this same blessing away from so many around the world

  8. Before the Wuyue kingdom surrendered, the Minnan regime in Fujian (comprising the Zhangzhou and Quanzhou regions—while Fuzhou was occupied by Wuyue) had already submitted peacefully. During the Song Dynasty, the ports of Quanzhou (in the Minnan region) and Ningbo (in Wuyue) rose to become the largest trading ports in Asia and the world. Later, during the Ming Dynasty, due to the maritime trade ban, Yuegang (Moon Port) in Zhangzhou became the sole legal port, channeling between one-quarter and one-third of the global silver output of the Age of Discovery into the region.
