At Kakazu Ridge on 19 April 1945, American tanks maneuvered around defended heights while Japanese fire stopped their supporting infantry. The vehicles reached Kakazu, but armor without close infantry support became vulnerable. Of thirty tanks that went around the ridge that morning, eight returned that afternoon. This describes the return count, not the fate of every crew.
