Think I had 4 of my birthday parties growing up at Chuck E. Cheese's. I can't say the animatronics were what brought me in, but they were certainly a unique experience that I didn't get anywhere else and with how homogenized entertainment has become (View Object On Screen), novel forms of entertainment and real life experiences are kind of what I crave now
We went there a lot as a kid in the early 90’s when it was Showbiz. My 7 year old loves it and always wants to go. Wish she could see the way it was before. Now it’s a brightly lite game room and nothing interesting. She still loves it tho.
Chuck E. Cheese, whose legal name is Charles Entertainment Cheese, was started by the same guy who founded Atari. That being Nolan Bushnell. In one of Nolan's books he said, "I may have founded Atari, but it was the rat who made me rich.

We had a Showbiz Pizza two towns over from where I grew up. It had the Rock-A-Fire Explosion animatronic characters show. When it became Chuck E. Cheese in the ‘80s/‘90s transition the RAFE show was kept at that location, until they moved to another area of the plaza into a smaller location (where the old Sam Goody music store used to be). As they did this, they scrapped the animatronic characters (may they rest in pieces). The old location became a Whole Foods.
Was last there in 2023 😅.
I remember when I was 7 my parents took me to Chuck E. Cheese for my birthday, they said we were going to get a computer at the computer store which was next door but surprised me with a party instead at Chuck E. Cheese. I’ll never forget it.

I use to go to the one in Escondido, CA. It was the swap meet and then Chuck E Cheese. Late 80’s!!!
Last time I saw the concert was at the Milwaukee place and there was a sudden bad storm we had to immediately find high ground and found ourselves forced to wait out the storm at Chuck E. Cheese. It was so busy and fun in there it's like nobody even knew the weather was seriously bad outside and you could forget too. It must've been past 9 at night too. The concert rocked for what it is, If you can appreciate something like that.
The pearl city, HI location closed either this year or last year. It was another location that had animatronics. I wonder what they did with the animatronics. 🤔
I used to work at showbiz in 87. It's was much better the chucky cheeses. The main game room was darker than chucky which made the games look good. It had a few black lights that made the game cabinets and carpet glow. We also had a smaller space themed game room that was lit with just the black lights which looked cool . I liked playing Tron so I played a lot in that one. It was a proper game arcade chucky is garbage. Took my niece there once was disappointed. It was so busy on Friday night. Wasn't alot to do in the area at the time . We had a cop at the door to keep the peace and restict how many were allowed in. After we closed up we made pizzas, drank beer we had beer taps, and played games and smoked weed. Was a blast. Even the band was better. It had retro look. We had guy who would dress up in the billy Bob costume which the kids liked . Hurricane Hugo hit and tore up the roof and got water damage i left afterwards to work elsewhere. It didn't pay much but it was a fun job.

I worked at this location in 1989 and 1990 when it was Showbiz Pizza Place. I have amazing memories of this place. I was born in Charlotte and I still live here. I've taken my, now 11 year old to this location many many times. She has outgrown it now but she LOVES the animatronics and the history of the place. This store is why I own 12 pinball machines and various arcade games in my 50's. Much love to CEC Entertainment. Even though Showbiz.was WAAAAAY better, I understand why they kept the CEC brand and converted the show. Damn shame really because the Rock-A-Fire Explosion was the WAY better show. BUT – This place is all about the birthday party revenue. The show runs on an Apple II computer. Yeah the Apple from 1982.
Funny how most kids who love FNAF have probably never been to a Chuck E Cheese with the animatronics that inspired that series.

the langhorne pa location had an impressive setup; the theatre was huge.

As a kid I would pretty much break down crying in horror at the sight of the animatronics whenever they would do a performance. Need to ask my 'ma but I'm pretty sure I even had a birthday party there and I just like… stayed out of the room with the stage while they sang me happy birthday and didn't come back until the curtains were shut.
Was also a bit freaked out by the bigger than average human sized anthropomorphic mouse costume at the time. iirc after 2012 they revised the costume to make him less of a literal behemoth mouse man and more of an inviting teenage mouse dude. I think it was that birthday party my parents took me aside to see the closet where the mouse would go change and I shit you not it was just some black guy in the suit who seemed pretty nice. In hindsight makes me laugh cause I probably ruined the guys day by being the autistic atom bomb of a child that I was.
Any ways, 28 now and am intrigued by animatronics in general, so I see the magic in the art and by no means want it to die.
That shopping center is in Charlotte though

I'm 45 and the 80s I was a little boy and I remember going and seeing those animatronics at ShowBiz Pizza and now I work in robotics.. I'm not saying that's what made me want to get into that later in life but I'm sure it has some influence it's good to see these still around man might have to drive from Oklahoma all the way up there just to come check it out.
1980s Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre locations featured a carpeted crawl space or tunnel system underneath the stage known as the "mouse hole" ..

They should mention they are reskinned Rock AFire Explosion animatronics from Showbiz that were Aaron Fecthers/Creative Engineering. Long history there.

They should put them back into all locations. Forget the foolish big screens and tiny jump area. I can see parents avoid Chuck E. Cheese to not have to dish out an extra $15/child for an area that is smaller than a mall playground. I even saw one resort to getting a claw machine with stuffed animals. Those are torture teases to kids. Just sell the darn stuffed animal.
