The solar eclipse is almost here! You can make this simple pinhole Sun viewer with just a few basic supplies.
The viewer projects an image of the Sun onto the white screen inside the tube — you are NOT looking through the pinhole at the Sun.
During an eclipse, watch the projected circle of the Sun change as the Moon moves across it!
IMPORTANT: Never look directly at the Sun or through the pinhole at the Sun.
Build one, try it out, and get ready for the eclipse!

A few answers to questions I’m seeing:
• *Can I make the pinhole bigger?*
Yes, a little! A larger hole makes the image brighter, but it can also make it blurrier. Start small and only enlarge it a little if you're having trouble seeing the projected Sun.
• *Can I use a toilet paper roll or a shorter tube?*
Yes! It will work, but a shorter tube makes a smaller projected image. You can tape two tubes together to make a longer viewer.
• *Can I use an empty kitchen paper/paper towel roll?*
Absolutely! That works great.
• *Can I use a Pringles can?*
Yes! A Pringles can should work well too.
• *Why does my Sun look white instead of yellow?*
That's normal! The projected Sun can appear white. Cameras and their settings can make it look more yellow in photos or videos.
• *Does this really work?*
Yes! I've done this activity successfully with fourth-grade students. They built their own viewers and were able to see the projected image of the Sun.
• *Can I take a picture of the Sun with my phone?*
Be careful about pointing a phone camera directly at the Sun. A safer option is to photograph the projected image inside your viewer.
*MOST IMPORTANT:* Never look directly at the Sun or through the pinhole. You are looking at the Sun's *projected image* inside the viewer.
Keep the questions coming! If you're building one, I'd love to hear how yours turns out.
My dad doesn't have paper we ran out and we don't have cardboard
Das funktionierte nicht, weil der Punkt auf der Projektionsfläche noch leuchtend rund zu sehen war, obwohl die Sonne bereits zu 90% abgedeckt war. Wir hatten auch auch eine Sonnenschutzbrille dabei !
The solar eclipse went behind a mountain so I missed it😭
Same lm in the uk there no wallmart or tagert
tysm this worked!! 🙂
We don’t have Walmart or target. 😢 and it’s the summer holidays cuz I’m in the Uk 🇬🇧

What if we use black paper?
Is this really safe for my eyes? I'll be experiencing a partial eclipse with 80–90% of the sun blocked out
