  2. As an Italian, I often chukle when I hear Kaga or Akagi, Shokaku and Zuikaku or Kako, because they are similar to the verb cacare/cagare.
And similarly katsu sauce, the character Katsumoto in the movie Last Samurai, sound like "cazzo".

  6. As a Japanese person, I think this issue goes far beyond the Self-Defense Forces. Japan has a peculiar tendency to maintain a distinction between what everyone knows to be true and what is officially acknowledged in legal or institutional terms.

Take "soaplands," for example. These are Japanese adult entertainment establishments legally regulated as private-room bathhouses offering bathing and intimate-contact services. In reality, however, everyone knows that sexual services are their main attraction. The distinction between the officially recognized business and what actually happens inside is maintained through a rather convenient legal interpretation.

Another example is pachinko, an enormously popular form of gambling in Japan. Officially, however, pachinko is classified as an amusement business rather than conventional gambling.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Customers purchase metal balls, play pachinko, and exchange their winnings for special prizes.

    2. They then take these prizes to a separate exchange shop, which purchases them for cash.

    3. A third business, a wholesaler, buys the prizes back and supplies them to the pachinko parlors.

This arrangement, known as the "three-shop system," allows pachinko parlors to avoid directly exchanging winnings for cash. Technically, the customers are simply playing a game and selling prizes to an independent business. In practice, everyone understands that they are gambling.

These two examples are probably unfamiliar to most people outside Japan, even though they are common knowledge here. The Self-Defense Forces, on the other hand, are internationally significant, which may explain why the contradictions surrounding their legal and constitutional status attract much greater attention.

Living in Japan, I encounter this strange discrepancy between official definitions and everyday reality quite frequently.

To me, it reflects something almost pathological about Japanese institutions: a willingness to preserve legal and bureaucratic fictions even when the reality is obvious to virtually everyone.
