It’s taken me most of the summer, but I’ve finally finished building the roof that will protect my boat from the harsh weather of the east coast. Next I just have to close in the end walls and me and the boat will hopefully be snow-free this winter.

Try and look for plans of a similar boat
You’re gonna have to build frames or mold, if you will, from the outside. Just get some plans that are close enough and then fair it out according to what you think makes it look right, but instead of building screwdjacks, I would make your own mold from the outside rather than a mold from the inside, as far as wooden boats are concerned.
6:58 Definitely looks like Japanese Katakana and/or hiragana. I can make out some characters, but most of them are too blurry or faded for me to guess
For example, the 3rd character from the left looks like it could be the hiragana character よ "yo",
and the last character on the right looks like the katakana character グ "gu".
You may want to consider putting cross beams to support lifting the motor back in when it is time, I do realise that is probably a year or more away
I have the same conundrum of making sure my boat is in its original shape :s
Building a house with a boat inside it.
Hi
If you are able to do 3d scan, could you use computer aided design in reverse. Then you might be able to find the best plan for the re build.
It sure is a fine barn, but it is no pool. English.
Heheheh…..will this be launched in "2 years" like Tally Ho was? I smell the development of a cool project here good sir. Came for the boat shed, definitely here for all 100 parts of the boat rebuild!
I was curious,
Are you still staying in that tent you built?
Also, are you planning on some sort of cover over the boat during winter so you can put a heater in place while you work?
I love watching you work…but; wouldn't this channel be more appropriately named, "An OCD Carpenter in the Woods" 🙂
removing screws… Left-handed drill bits worked for me and my woodie disassembly
The patience of a saint is nothing compared to that of a boat repairman
I'll pitch in $5 to help get Leo from Tally Ho out to your boat shed for a week
Nice video.
Wood must be pretty cheap where you live.
In my country that will costs tenthousands for the wood alone.
Beautiful shed
Painted waterlines often curve up at the bow and stern. Don’t use that as a reference line.
If the boat ends up half as good as the boat shed it will be perfect!!
The dogs are so cute. I am so happy you have those two to keep you company. Seeing them in the videos just makes me smile every time. Glad Niska is doing better.
Wonderful progress on the workshop too! Finally having the full roof, especially after the weather you had for some last video, will make everything be more secure and most importantly be ready for the winter. I absolutely love the Workshop project and i think it added to the whole project rather than taking away from the boat.
Man all of this is awesome, can't wait to see a bit down the line when the real reassembly starts on the boat but I'm loving this content in the meantime
Hi Josh, This morning I saw a video that may be helpful to you in the future. After you get the boat back in shape, add the new frames, fair the hull, this method will help strengthen and preserve the the hull and minimize maintenance. In this video this couple learns how to Cold Mold the exterior of their wooden boat they are building. You'll see the progression of their learning techniques, how they keep it uniform and how they speed up their process. If the existing planking on your boat is good and it can be sanded fair this process would save future dry rot along with plank and frame replacement.I hope this will be helpful.Cold molded diagonal planking our wooden boat (EP 4)" Boat by the River. https://youtu.be/8bbauURUyOI?si=DSi64_rGCqUkUKfF
congrats on the finished roof! splendid job!
Incredible effort with the shed mate, it's stunning! Best of luck 🤞🏻
The shape of your new boat will not be the shape of the old boat so start with keelson good , bad ,framing and the clamps and shelves to create a inner skeleton then when you take planks off nothing will change I always say start at the bottom keelson good or bad hog is gravity and works through the whole structure
Can you find where john g alden put all his articles first step is his book I can tell the boat has a hog in the sheer clamp
Nice work. Good thinking. Relentless commitment.
Dude this structure is an amazing achievement already on it's own. It's gorgeous. Your channel keeps on giving me inspiration and motivation to push myself to learn new things and be more independent. Keep on rocking.
Congrats on getting the roof on, and when you did. One suggestion I would make it to use the 'attic' space above each of the shipping containers and under the roof, as long-term storage. You could easily catalogue what is there, so you don't lose track of that, and keep the storage in the containers for more day-to-day supplies and materials. Just a thought. Keep up the great work. I really enjoy seeing my early life and a big part of me in your videos.
Man being under that tin roof working on a wooden boat with a soft october rain outside must be absolute peak atmosphere
Why not weld bolts to the containers? Like for the roof?
You now just need a better staircase again, for access to the boat.
Perhaps a local university or tech school could volunteer a 3D scan for this project. Maybe even create a set of drawing plans from the results.
So happy to see work on the boat picking up again. Glad you got the new boat shed up before winter
Very nice roof.
Make sure to install extra lighting before you enclose the end walls.
Speak to Leo
Have to admit. I started watching with ep1 and stopped because it was simple too painful too watch. Now I feel there's a lot more feasibility to the project and it's more fun to watch again. Best of luck – good job!
Praise the Lord. Halleluja. Maybe we can start the boat again soon?
this is my favorite channel.
Touching the void ? Brilliant book…
Joshua, your work, description of your work, and the commentary as you go is an absolute inspiration to an old, washed-up
83 y.o house builder like me. Keep plodding along, my friend.
This has been a master class in building a structure. I know you have mentioned about being able to take it apart and sell it. This is too beautiful to sell and an amazing amount of work, there is so much you could do with, within, this.
I wouldn’t sell the boat shed, you could make a nice house later on
try youtube: sailing/SV Yaba pretty much a total "restoration of an 85ft wooden yacht
Congrats on completing the roofs! Now you can work in a sheltered workshop out of the rain, and maybe to some extent, out of the snow! Master Craftsman!
The process with the hull shape is called "Lofting" .
Leo (Tally Ho) did it with laser leveler/marker, and he exlains it in these episodes:

Keep up the good work.
Well done !

Boatshed is great. Can you not buy the piece of land it is on and turn it into a house when the boat launches??
Hi Josh, My wife and I were watching a video tonight and every time I watch that sailboat building channel I think of you. So tonight i'm going to link a few of their videos. They are building their 40 foot wooden boat in Tasmania, Austrailia. While your channel is called A Boat in the Woods, their channel is called A boat By The River. The couple has no professional boat building experince…but the craftmanship is amazing. I feel like you might get a lot out of watching their videos and it might be a good source of inspiration as well HOW TO KNOWLEDGE. You may be able to communicate with them and get some advice. While it is very much a traditional built boat, the hull is finished out in fiberglass and epoxy….which should give it a long life and less future maintenance.

Yeah it's starting to frost down here in the us as well, it also doesn't help the fact that for my case the lake Erie has decided to coat the entirety of PA in cold weather. Good video as always keep up the good work and start to keep warm it's getting cold.
