They Hacked CPU-Z — Were You Infected?

I don’t know if ANY software is safe anymore.

Recently the official download website for popular software CPU-Z and HWMonitor was compromised, and the official download links were redirected to malware. The malicious files were named to impersonate the software. Both the installer and portable versions were compromised. In this video I talk about how it happened, what the malicious versions looked like, and more.

  1. Why would I go to a website to download CPU-Z if I likely already have it on my disk as a power user? I would just transfer it from the computer where it is stored to the computer where it is needed. If you run any paid programs, you can't rely on fetching them from the web every time. So freeware can follow the same path.

  2. I discovered a strange behavior that seemed to activate a virus. I installed the portable HWMonitor and ran it. While the app was still open, I tried to delete a folder in File Explorer but accidentally deleted the HWMonitor folder itself. Normally, that shouldn’t be possible while the app is running. Right at that moment, Windows Defender detected a virus, which really shocked me. That was my experience.

  3. Question: I recently upgraded both CPU-Z and HWMonitor (and I ran them as well) but I upgraded them via winget (so I didn't download any exe/zip from the official website). Am I safe?

  4. This is why I want to live in an internetless cottage on the beach man. Internet is scary. That’s why I’m on it all day for work then I go home and I’m on it all night 🤩🥳
