Why should a private advocacy group be monitoring Americans’ political speech and feeding intelligence to law enforcement with little transparency or democratic accountability? Opposing unchecked surveillance of pro-Palestinian, antiwar, Muslim, Jewish, left-wing, or right-wing Americans is a civil-liberties position—not antisemitism.
In response to a comment I saw from @airspeedisalive (or something similar) -Calling criticism of the ADL, AIPAC, Israeli government policy, or political surveillance “antisemitic” is a way to avoid the actual issue. And saying “Jewish people have never committed terrorism” while declaring Muslims the “true enemy” is both false and bigoted. No religion or ethnicity is collectively responsible for the crimes of extremists.
The FBI has described the Jewish Defense League as a violent extremist organization, and JDL-linked acts have been classified as terrorism. That does not make Jews responsible for the JDL—just as al-Qaeda, ISIS, or any other extremist group does not make Muslims responsible for their crimes. The standard must be applied equally.
Nor is the USS Liberty some imaginary event: Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attacked the U.S. Navy ship in 1967, killing 34 Americans and wounding 171.
