As one sleeping pod company looks to build a massive 400-bed super dorm, experts are skeptical it will provide a real solution for most residents struggling to afford housing in San Francisco. But for $700 a month, it’s an affordable solution for people who can make it work. KQED News reporter Sydney Johnson spent several nights in a pod to give you an inside look at what it was like to sleep in a pod and what level of privacy one can expect.

$700 used to get you a 1 bedroom apartment not that long ago. Like two or three decades ago. San Francisco has been expensive for a long time, but this is still a sign of how crazy inflation and housing prices in particular have gotten.
I wish there were more options like this, but they should be practically free for what is being offered here.

I can see this in more mono-ethnic countries, but a country with as many cultures and identities as America….
“Independence” needs space to breath. Even some families have trouble living together and that’s with their own rooms.

It is a little expensive for virtually no privacy and just a curtain as barrier when you're laying on the bed. Renting a room with other roommates is about the same price, why not just do that, and you have less people using the 1 shower. I think a "sleeping pod" like that should be $400 at most since you're sharing a big room with many other people, and you can't lock your items when you leave for work or whatever. $700 is too much

i checked zillow and saw 1bd rm apartments from the low $1400 to $2000. You guys want to live with rich people then you gotta pay for it. You want to save money, then the hood is where its at.
Edit: Just checked zillow and those prices I stated are 83 availbale rentals for 1bd or studio all with 1 bathroom.
governments are corrupt and guilty of allowing normal housing to become investments to screw over normal honest citizens. government are in bed with big business real estate and realtors. all totally corrupt ruining the futures of most young adults. hasnt been a free market for the last 15 years. became totally corrupted
That is not a solution not even in the right direction. It just another way for people to get rich of the people who doesnt work in the high paying job industry. This is not okay to any logic. We are human not dogs. Stop creating tiny spaces and force it upon us. There should be a law. Landlord should not be charging such a ridiculous price. Enough is enough. Make it make sense. Whatever is happening is created by human. Someone is greedy….

I'm sure SF city council is already on top of this. There will probably be some regulations or city governance of this type of housing. I must say, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. The toilet situation would not work for me, though.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, we had these in a lot of cities. They're called tenement buildings and slums.
