  1. I believe "S" being a Kryptonian symbol was not the original idea. Originally it did indeed just mean Superman. When the back story changed I am not sure but I believe it to be pretty recent. Post Christopher's Reeves films.

  2. Silly to have a QI question about something that has no fixed canon, because the whole point of QI is the obvious answer is wrong but without a fixed canon no answer is wrong.

  3. S a Kryptonian symbol?

this is ONLY in the movies from 1978 onward

in the comics up to the 60;s when I read them avidly it NEVER appeared in kryptonian society and was NEVER the family crest of Kal El. Jor 'El's crest was the sunburst

i do not recall the S ever explained in the comics but as it never appeared on Krypton the S for Super is the best and most fair answer

    SO YOU ARE WRONG

call me a fundamentalist but canon matters

and movies that violate canon are NOT canon

  4. Teri didn't know because they hadn't made that nonsense up when she played Lois Lane. "The 'S' stands for Hope" is utter bollocks; hopefully James Gunn ignores it.

  5. 🤓 Actually, It originally did represent S, for Superman in 1938 when the character was created, In the 1978 movie it became the symbol for the House of El, Superman's Kryptonian family. In the 2004 Mark Waid's "Superman: Birthright" comic It was both the symbol for the house of El and Hope.
