He was one of the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, and an eye infection saved his life. Then Sparta made him wish it hadn’t.
Aristodemus was so sick he could barely see, so King Leonidas sent him away from the pass before the last stand against the Persians. He walked home to Sparta alive, and nobody would speak to him or even give him a light for his fire. They called him “Aristodemus the Trembler”.
A year later, at the Battle of Plataea (479 BC), he broke out of the Spartan line and charged the Persians alone. Herodotus called him the bravest man on the field. Sparta still refused to honour him, because he was trying too hard to die.
Source: Herodotus, Histories, book 7 (229 to 231) and book 9 (71). Herodotus also records a second version of why Aristodemus survived (7.230).

This is the main reason they saw their downfall.
They are way too hard on each other.
I agree with all hard training and all hustle but not this ego
Context: In Sparta if you live by the sword you die by it, that’s their philosophy when it comes to war. So when our guy tried to redeem himself, it was no different than how people of ancient Japan tried to regain their honor.
Heck, there’s a whole thing about Sparta sending a couple of their men to the King of Persia as sacrificial lambs, only to be treated with kindness. This tells you something about history and how different cultures can be.
Everyone, none helped the king when he said they should fight together against the Persians. But everyone avoided saying it was a sacred period and war was forbidden. Otherwise the king and his army would not die. Not to mention, the religious leaders and other kings gave info to the enemies.
spartan then 300 after a brave spartan die is 299 bro
cant do shit in ancient greece
what is her name
Soldier: "I dont want to die for sparta"
Sparta: "you will die for sparta"
Soldier: "I will die for sparta!"
Sparta: "who said to die spartan?"
"Because you tried too hard to die" 😭🙏
That is pretty cool not gonna lie
The ususal suspects😅
very reasonable. You leaving the line risk the entire formation.
Persian empire ☠️
Sparta is Disrespectful
ah yes! Just like the dwarf slayerss
Holy timing😭
He broke formation and coherence to Sparta was everything.
Fair enough tbh
what the fuck is this animation style
Not a best lie to hear
Shaming him for a all mistakes, but calling him a hero when he dies.
Basically using his death for profits and attention
Бургер не понимает что покидание строя может означать проигрыш.
Когда солдата нету на своем месте-образуется брешь в защите. Некому положить щит на твой щит и некому облокотиться на тебя.
Refusal probably stammed from not wanting to motivate soldiers to break formation.
"No man would give him a light for his fire or speak to him; he was called Aristodemus the Coward."
Its a funny thing to say, but nobody wants to share a foxhole with a hero. Every time someone breaks ranks to "be a hero" they dont just risk their own lives, they endanger their allies.
Ancient Sparta was grimy
That's just stupid I used to be oppsesed by learning about wars and war games but the more I learn about it the more I fell it's not even worth it to fight
I mean if you sold a match one round then just start sweating the next it’s kinda toxic gameplay
Damn thats crazy. Guy had to live with survivors guilt and the moment he snapped, he chose to do it on the enemy instead of those shaming him and STILL gets shit on. People suck bruh
But Sparta is no more
Persians mentioned 🎉
yes he was trying too hard to die
Proof you can't make everyone happy
Just do you
Who cares about the spartans anyways lol
Not a tragedy just a last stand
Soldier: "Hey, my commander sent me home on sick leave until I get better and…"
Greek Village: "Treason!"
Soldier: "…"
In Life shame, in death redemption… But that was the first battle formation at Zama
Bro, this is just a classic thing of tall poppy syndrome man I hate this syndrome. Everyone is just too jealous of that person being too cool
modern china
"Here on this ragged patch of earth called platea, xerxes' hordes face, obliteration!"
What if the hater was done the same thing as it was done to the spartan who got humiliated
Imagine getting more respect from your enemy
I feel bad for Aristodemus
They mad he's alive
Sparta is overrated and not even that reliable at fighting Persia. Athens was the thorn on Persian side based on their support of Ionian revolt and they even managed to free the Greek city states in Asia Minor for a while. Sparta meanwhile continually takes bribes from Persia whenever they need to fight Athens. Persia basically bankrolled the Spartan navy against Athens during the Peloponnesian War. Sparta after defeating Athens practically gave up the city states of Asia Minor to Persia. Then when Alexander invaded Persia, Sparta was bribed to lead a rebellion against the Macedonians in Greece, only to be defeated at Megalopolis. Alexander called it the battle of mice when he heard about it.
There is a book abt this, from antonis antoniadis, the wolf of sparta
Imagine being dismissed by your commander due to debilitating illness, unknowing that they will fight to the death, and then be punished for it?
