*In this video, the different types of amplifiers such as class A, Class B, Class AB, Class C and Class D amplifiers are explained and how they are used in specific application is also explained.*
*Types of Amplifiers:*
_The amplifier types are defined based on their conduction angle, meaning for what duration of the input signal, the amplifier conducts._
Based on that there are total 5 types of Amplifiers.
_1) Class A Amplifier_
This type of Amplifier conducts for the entire duration of the input signal. (conduction angle – 360°)
Type A amplifier provides the best linearity among all types of amplifiers, but they have poor efficiency (max. 25 %).
That is why they are suitable as a first stage low voltage amplifier.
_2) Class B Amplifier_
This type of amplifier uses push-pull amplifier, and at any given time only one amplifier conducts. In this type of Amplifier, each amplifier conducts approximately for 180°.
This amplifier provides high efficiency (max. 78.5 %), but has cross-over distortion.
_3) Class AB Amplifier_
This type of Amplifier also uses push-pull amplifier configuration, but here the transistors are biased such that, they conducts for more than 180°. Therefore, unlike class B amplifier, it does not have cross-over distortion. This amplifier provides best of both class A and Class B amplifier (good efficiency and better linearity), and it is suitable as power amplifier in audio applications.
_4) Class C Amplifier_
This type of Amplifiers conducts for less than 180°. And since they have high non-linear distortion, they are not suitable as audio amplifier. But they are suitable as RF amplifier. Since this type of amplifiers are conducting for a brief duration (less than 180°), they provides good efficiency (around 80 % ).
_5) Class D Amplifier_
This type of amplifier are ON/OFF type of amplifier. Here the input signal is converted into PWM signal and then it is passed through the low-pass filter. After low-pass filter, the original signal (but amplified version) is recovered. This type of amplifier, provides highest efficiency (greater than 90 %) and suitable as an audio amplifier for battery operated devices.
