Welcome to the heavy spoilers show im your host Paul and this video we’re breaking down Monster on Netflix.

–

The Lizzie Borden story has just released on the platform and as always with these monster shows they take a lot of creative liberties with the story. On the channel we’ve covered the Menendez Brothers along with Ed Gein and tried to separate the fact from fiction. So in this video I want to do that with Lizzie borden and talk about the main changes on the show. This will predominantly cover the story the series is based on along with how the show changes a lot of historical facts. The series dramatizes the 1892 axe murders and sets them as the backdrop to discuss feminine rage and more. Like Ed Gein it also talks about Bordens legacy and features figures like Aileen Wuronos.

  1. Jeffery was the only story told right. Lizzie was fcking horrible show, they did good in the beginning and just went south. Final episode was trash. They have to let the show monster go

  2. People really need to adapt that this kind of series are not accurate , I enjoyed it much really

-they made the victims really so hateful that you want to murdem them yourself especially the step mother
-some scenes are shown comedically funny
    – I really really really hate subliminal messages.

  3. Because being realistic is not what it's trying to do. It's an Edenic allegory that is also a Gothic Lesbo Art Slasher. The Borden house is the Garden. Andrew is the failed Adam who tends it but can't see what's taken root. Sarah — the first wife — is Eve, absent and unreplaced. She is the ghost of wholeness, the one who would have recognised the intruder. Bridget is the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil – she brings knowledge about the world, art, culture and eventually forbidden fruit (sex), to Lizzie, as her first and greatest love, and eventually turns Lizzie to sin (ie. the idea of making right and wrong for yourself independent of what society thinks aka justified vengeful murder.) And Abby is THE SNAKE (her hair is styled to resemble a Cobra's hood): deceitful, venomous, but strikingly beautiful and graceful. Lizzie is the SEED OF THE WOMAN who will "bruise the serpent's head" by striking it 40 times. It's using a kind of storytelling that Hollywood doesn't use often: mythic realism, not fully realistic, but not fully fantastic either.

  4. As a lesbian, I wish they didn't add in a possible lesbian relationship with Maggie. But I DO wish Ryan would make a Monster series about Aileen Wournos because Sarah Paulson is SO GOOD at playing her. Like I'm sure Aileen would've loved it.

  5. 5:36 "She'd also been inquiring about buying acid…" You missed the point of this claim. It was "prussic acid" that was reportedly requested at the pharmacy. Prussic acid is another name for hydrogen cyanide, an extremely toxic and deadly poison.

  6. I understand liberties or a few switch ups to shows like this. In the Wu-Tang Saga series, RZA's got like….one or two sisters and that's because my dude had like some 9 different sisters and he's in a band that consists of 9 different artists and then all the other people surrounding it – So I'm cool when they combine stuff to sort of "represent" a larger thing (like they did with Dahmer's neighbor's for example). I also enjoy having parallels of other killers who came along afterwards or event that parallel after the fact. What I have REAL issues with, is the glorifying of the killers themselves, not focusing enough on the victims who SHOULD be the real story to these things and most importantly, the spreading of false information. Look, the allegedly stuff, can be filler fluff piece for the sake of time padding or fleshing out all available information about these cases. But having Lizzie "make a life of it" by rejoining her lesbian lover to go on to fight the crusade towards women's rights to vote and strangers accepting her for this greater cause she's achieving while her and Aileen are all forgiven and walking into Heaven together in unison is just all dumb fucking BULLSHIT. FACTS PEOPLE. Some speculation, some theories, sure, fine, but only stuff that revolves around it and ties into it – Like….was it documented somewhere that Lizzie slapped a trick or treater or demanded book stores take books about her down from shelves? Did Aileen actually go and stay in the Borden house and sign a check in book saying the owner is a bitch? Did Aileen in any interview or letter mention Lizzie Borden ever at all???? Otherwise – stop making shit up and tying shit together that isn't there – When they went to the courts and the crowds were divided between men begging to have her hanged vs women calling her a saint, that would've been a great time for a realistic parallel to the OJ Simpson case which was also a big national televised phenomenon except instead of it being a battle of the sexes out on the dividing lines it was black vs white and that would've been a profound thing to point out. America's need to consume this sort of wacky nonsense and how we remain so un apologetically divided to this day.

  7. I think if Ryan Murphy just started making series and saying they are inspired by these murderers it would be fine. Take away the real names and people affected and just make the dramatized thriller you want and then in interviews say yeah it was inspired by this person. That would be 10x better because there is a separation of reality and fiction, even if some of is distasteful the viewer knows this isn’t what actually happened. The problem with monsters is that there is no distinct separation they present these fictionalized stories as what actually happened and unfortunately most people watching will just take that as fact.

  8. Absolutely egregious and fictional retelling. These shows are really latching onto the ideas that these killers were maybe just gay and autistic and must have just been misunderstood.
Felt like they really misrepresented the ages of everybody. Lizzie was 32, Maggie was 25, and Nance was still a teenager. Yet the show made it feel like Maggie was grooming Lizzie.
And probably the most disgusting part was misrepresnting Lizzie Borden as a cornerstone in the womens suffrage movement. That felt so significant and dishonest. I just don't get the point

  9. This was not meant to be a documentary at all and even the whole story went into how fictional writings and media throughout time twists the stories. I was satisfied to see it as a work of creative fiction inspired by events touching upon the fiction aspect very blatantly. The only thing that was openly said to be her words verbatim was written on the screen in the episode of her being first interviewed by the police. I enjoyed the creativity of the series and also appreciate you making a video showing the facts vs fiction, as I believe that was part of the intent in the series itself! 👍

  10. Idk I think the Redditor crowd likes to say these are bad because they’re inaccurate and they show humanity in the killers but, killers are human, I think there’s a much greater argument for the value of engaging with them compassionately and empathetically than there is to just write them off as useless or terrible people.

As far as the inaccuracy goes, it’s just more fun.

  11. As a true crime lover it is utterly disgusting how Ryan use SK and change their story for his own sick fantasy. Misleading people. I really don’t like watching anything true crime on Netflix. A lot of misinformation

  12. Clearly the creators of this series was on illegal stimulants when producing this crap! I actually prefer the Elizabeth Montgomery version back in the 1970s. Even that was inaccurate but sure beats this Murphy mess.
