A new S$1.2 billion hydrogen-ready power plant is coming up on Jurong Island, creating 50 jobs in operations and maintenance. Ready by 2029, PacificLight’s 670 megawatt power plant will be the first in Singapore to pair a gas turbine with large-scale battery storage, making it more reliable and efficient to keep up with growing energy demands. It will be able to generate enough electricity to power about 1.2 million four-room flats. Nadirah Zaidi reports.

0:39 so is it 1.2 million 4 room flats or is it 1 million? 200,000 flats is a big rounding error… come on CNA…
I don't really get this facility.. most likely it's relying on gray or blue hydrogen and this has a fatal flaw: it's producing a lot of carbon from it's manufacture, the very thing we r trying to fight.. saying it's green energy is dubious at best if it's blue hydrogen( facilities to capture carbon)to gray hydrogen which produces more carbon than burning natural gas.. I get tat we r going in the right direction but this is a 1.2B strange investment if we r trying to go green😅
But is extracting Hydrogen itself consumes energy? It requires fossil fuel to get energy which then for the electrolysis process to get hydrogen.
Our leaders need to use other green economy for electricity generation, other countries implemented anerobic plant using sewerage, how come Singapore not have this? And the 24/7 buring of rubbish, have they installed sirling engine which can also generate electricity too? Compressed air engine too can generate electricity which have been using on decades. So why is our leaders keep using middle east as an excuse to increase rates of electricity? Russia can also supply us but our sg leaders commented about the war on Ukraine which is none of our business in the first place. So our leaders' fault become ours? 😮
50 jobs?

Wow Singapore so ahead of Malaysia ❤
Mr Yu seems v stressed …
Our sg leaders sit & take salaries only, the work all dedicated to people below them for work. It costs Singapore to be backward and we risks being takeover by surrounding countries because our leaders are also not pro Singaporeans, they are pro foreigners.
Not only hydrogen should we run, we should already be capturing carbon from the atmosphere to synthesize to fuel, anerobic plant using our sewerage can also generate electricity….then integrate all to have electromagnetic to turn the turbine so as to run more rotations which can produce more power, in the past trains run on compressed air or stirling energy, so have this been explore. Why have we gone through science subjects in primary and secondary schools but yet we are so limited to run our electricity only through natural gas and fuel? What are leaders been doing all these decades? Study so many qualifications yet being so backward in action to the people of Singapore 🇸🇬
1.2 billion plant, Create.. 50jobs. AI era is scary.
Here's how to reduce electricity demand…stop increasing Singapore's population to 6.9 million and beyond!
Spend more ya
Sarawak H2 production has a big customer in Singapore. We seem to be 4kw/person or 24 giga.
We should CONSERVE electricity in households, and develop new CLIMATE CONTROL technology. (We have case study of WATER TECHNOLOGY in the Mahathir-Lee Kuan Yew water conflict. NOW we have a large new industry and even Middle East benefits).
Now we do Electricity conservation and use electricity for better economic output.
Turbines do not care about the fuel, it only care about the quality of the steam generated
Waste of resources. Not very sure himself. 😮😮😮😮
Such nonsense.
We should go nuclear already since long. Energy problem solved once and for all plus it is clean energy.
Build it in Sentosa island instead, Jurong island is too close to HDB residents 😮😮😮
TBH, Singapore's power needs have no limitations.
All developed economies have a power thirst. 😅😅😅
Meritocracy society progresses mainly on means for the chosen way of life.
😅"But at what cost ? "
Singapore have the highest electricity price in the region and Southeast Asia.
For July to September 2026, the regulated household tariff is S$0.3191 per kWh (before GST) or S$0.3478 per kWh (with GST).
This rate represents the highest recorded tariff level in Singapore to date, driven largely by global natural gas volatility and Middle East conflicts affecting imported fuel costs.
While Singapore historically holds the highest or near-highest residential electricity rates in Southeast Asia (around US$0.276/kWh).
